Like many who have become mental health professionals, my journey toward becoming a counselor blossomed from the muck of early childhood trauma. It was taboo for me to seek counseling but it was acceptable for me to become a counselor. In my early 20s, my first counseling session was flooded with my tears. I could barely speak through the shame of needing help. My counselor at the time was patient and kind. He taught me self-compassion and accountability. Meanwhile, I sought avenues to build a career based on giving back to others what I was lacking growing up: the support and education to heal and grow.
The expressive arts have always been a source of comfort and healing for me. When I was a kid and everyone asked "what do you want to be when you grow up", I would reply, "an artist for Disney". Until I was an adult, I thought this dream conflicted with my passion for psychology until I learned that I could incorporate the arts into treatment. Since then, I have become trained and educated as an Art Therapist.
Growing up, I was raised to think like an innovator. The scientific method and problem-solving has become my default thought process. In order to serve youth virtually across North Carolina, I have begun the journey of incorporating Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) into treatment. This treatment compliments my work with teens and women struggling with anxiety, depression, and phobias well.
I also have been intensively training in DBT and Theraplay modalities. I am constantly learning new things and I read at least 1 new book per week. I am a lifelong spiritual seeker and maintain a daily connection to my creator. When I'm not building my practice and seeing clients, I am spending time with my husband, two adorable children, hiking or playing games at home.
I'm excited to meet new people and learn new things!
