AUTHENTICITY, ALIVENESS, and CONNECTION are vital ingredients to living a healthy and meaningful life. Unfortunately these qualities do not always receive the proper attention needed to thrive. As a result, we develop coping strategies that often lead us to not getting what we want in life, leaving us feeling stuck, anxious, depressed, and hopeless. Therapy provides a unique opportunity to explore the unconscious patterns that keep us stuck. Therapy can help you make meaningful change to live the life you wish and to create the relationships you long for. I help individuals, couples, adolescents and families create necessary and meaningful changes in their lives, relationships, or with family members. Whether you are feeling stuck in your own life, or with your intimate partner/marriage, or navigating challenging dynamics with your family, I can support you to engage authentic and meaningful change. Each session is customized to support whatever needs arise in each session. I practice integrating a number of evidence based practices with attunement and empathy. I understand everyone has a plethora of different contexts--race, gender, sexuality, class, etc, that shape who we are and how we experience ourself and the world. I hold this with respect.

“How am I going to fail today?” you think as you lay in bed, searching for the motivation to get up. You dread the daily, self-confirmation that you’re lazy, undisciplined. No matter what you accomplish, it never feels enough. There is this nagging feeling in the pit of your gut reminding you to do more: lead more projects, volunteer for more committees, donate more time. There are no words to describe the exhaustion in your soul. What’s worse is that nobody understands how tired you actually feel. Not like you would let them know, as you wear the mask of “normal enough” well… except you can feel the facade begin to crack. View 4 Photos You’ve had therapy before. While it was good enough, it felt like sharing your experiences felt like teaching a foreign language. You’re ready for therapy beyond whiteness. I’m Alison - quirky, passionate, inquisitive, - and I’m a therapist. I roll without the rose tinted glasses. We will challenge the BS your internal bully feeds you with curiosity. You can continue looking at the self-help guides at the bookstore and yet you keep ending up in the same place: frustrated and a bit hopeless. Maybe this is a sign to try something new. Schedule a consultation with me by clicking on my website, to help you stop the emotional rollercoaster.

It's a courageous step to seek help. Things aren't working and perhaps you are looking for a new way, new strategies and perspective. You need relief from this angst. The surprise here is that your pain, frustration or relationship conflict can also be an asset. I am not suggesting minimizing your emotional suffering nor the importance of us finding immediate relief. My experience is that in facing your difficulties we can move towards enduring change. How does change happen in therapy? In my work with clients we identify some of the stories you have been telling yourself. Many stories and thoughts are limiting, repetitive and have questionable truth. Some examples may be that we are inept, things will never change, if only we had a different partner, or that we are forever imprisoned by fears and addictions. We share this narrative and examine it without judgment. In fleshing out the ritualized stories we learn of their origins. While insight is important, we've got to use it to craft different actions and ways of thinking. Over time we develop a different relationship with ourselves and the people in our life.

How are you? When you are asked this simple question in a warm, supportive environment, it is the first step to discoveries that produce significant and lasting change. We will start by investigating together to clarify what is actually going on with you. We can explore both long-term and short-term causes--whatever feels relevant. Based on what we find out, we will work to effect the changes you want. Together, we will find your own unique keys to a meaningful and rewarding personal and professional life. To bring positive change, the methods we can use include: illuminating and transforming self-defeating thoughts and behavioral patterns; mindfulness meditation; and somatic exercises that help with emotions held more deeply in your body. How you communicate with yourself and others is also a vital area to explore. My own life experience will help me understand where you are coming from and how I can help. I lost my mother to cancer at an early age, so I know firsthand about grief and childhood trauma. I am a husband and father, have corporate work experience, and teach meditation to individuals and groups worldwide.

I'm a Marriage & Family Therapist in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. I work primarily with individuals and some families. I have focus and experience in anger management, relationships, life transitions, and trauma. I enjoy working with teenagers and young adults as they develop their personal identity and grow towards healthy independence and need support they cannot get from their peer or parent group. I also work with a large number young adult and mid-life individuals facing career stress/fatigue and life challenges. I was previously the onsite therapist at Square (now Block) at their HQ in SF. My approach with each individual is very collaborative. I truly believe in identifying the goals the client wants to get out of their work with me and determining the best strategy for getting results. My background training is influenced greatly by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, Solution Focused Therapy, Humanistic Theory, and attachment. I have received extensive training in Anger Management and have facilitated numerous groups for controlling anger. I facilitate trainings on the impact of trauma on individuals and communities.
