Hi there! I am SO glad that you are here. I specialize in helping individuals heal from trauma that was experienced either in childhood or later in life, and the numerous things that often follow. For some individuals this looks like healing shame, anxiety, depression, grief, difficulty with connection or attachment in relationships, struggles with intimacy or trust, addictions or compulsive behaviors, disordered eating, and a multitude of other things. I believe healing occurs best in supported connection. I work to create a safe space where you feel comfortable examining beliefs and behaviors that may no longer serve you and begin the process of healing. I’ve been where you are. I know the struggles of feeling stuck and overwhelmed as well as the joy and light that can exist on the other side. I take a collaborative approach to the counseling relationship and am in no way a "sit-and-nod" therapist! I believe fully that YOU are the expert on your life and my hope is to help guide your journey to healing and growth while promoting your autonomy and power of choice.

*** CURRENTLY NOT TAKING NEW CLIENTS *** Therapy offers the opportunity to make lasting positive changes in life and in relationships. By exploring the role the past has played in current difficulties and dissolving old, destructive patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, life can be more balanced and joyful. I offer warmth, compassion, support, and insight to my clients, with an approach that is direct, non-judgmental, and tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. Oriented toward building on natural strengths and empowering meaningful changes, our work together can foster an increased ability to more adaptively attend to the ever-changing flow of life. Together, we will work toward identifying destructive behavioral patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and those around us. Learning the art of non-judgmental awareness - mindfulness - we will explore these themes, connecting more intimately with the memories, emotions, thoughts, and sensations fundamentally associated with them. By exploring unmet childhood and current attachment needs, we learn to conquer self-defeating habits and discover a new way of approaching our thoughts, emotions, and personal behavior. Empowering ourselves to get our basic needs met in this way, we move toward creating greater balance, harmony, and joy in our lives.

The client-therapist rapport is a potent common factor in therapy success. You want to feel comfortable opening up and sharing your truths. Have you found yourself struggling with a change in your life that has left you feeling uncomfortable with your current emotional state. I offer a place to clear your head, organize your thoughts, and express your feelings without judgement. Give yourself permission to pause, process and then progress. I take pride in helping clients who may be struggling to find balance, purpose and a sense of normalcy again. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with relationship issues, self -esteem, sexual orientation, acculturating, "adulting", or who find themselves in transition. For many of us asking for help can be daunting; especially if we are the ones that everyone else comes to for help. I want you to know that it's okay for you to need help too. It doesn't make you less of a leader, friend, mother, father, wife, son or daughter; It makes you human. I invite you to make yourself a priority and take care of you.

I also supervise counselors, so we have a group of therapists to address your particular concerns or needs. I am a seasoned therapist who can provide you with practical understanding and assistance. I can often help sort out difficult or complex psychological problems and assist clients in prioritizing the issues they want to address. I work with children and families, as well as individual adult issues. I integrate a variety of different methods and perspectives based on the presenting needs and concerns of individual clients. How many times have those close to you tried to tell you what you should do? Do you feel like no one is really listening to your story? I strive to provide a space to be heard without being forced to conform to someone else's individual biases. You are the expert of your life: you live it. I'm an expert on process, and I want to help you find what change looks like in your life. I love the power of story, and your story is unique and rich. I tend not to subscribe to just one theoretical orientation simply because there is no "one size fits all" method of counseling. Rather, I draw from many different theories to devise a plan that will be the most helpful for you. My goal is to create the safest space possible: the one place where you'll never feel judged or criticized. Also, I am an Army vet, so I have a special place in my heart for vets and their families. I offer a discount for vets and their immediate families.

I am interested in our struggles to become ourselves. My decision to become a therapist was based on my own experiences in therapy. Most people come to therapy because they are in pain and life is not working out as they hoped. That means that some of therapy is about the relief of pain and some of it is about a reorganizing of one's life. The experience of therapy also affects the therapist, so I have learned a great deal from my patients. I think "openness" would be a good word to describe my sense of how the process develops. I specialize in issues that relate to men; also grief work, creativity and life transitions such as divorce, midlife struggles and other major changes. I changed my career in order to become a therapist. This makes me attuned to people's life journeys. I'm a writer and the creative process holds fascination for me. I have been involved in the "men's movement" for many years and feel connected to issues men face. I also see therapy as a way of taking "time out" to develop skills and appreciate who we are and assess the blocks that prevent us from becoming more fully ourselves.

As an art therapist, I believe in the healing process that comes from art-making. I first meet with my client(s) to determine their goals for working together. Then, I engage my client(s) in the creative process. As an Art Therapy, I provide support, encouragement, and a safe space for the creative process to take place. After the artmaking, I encourage my clients to share their experiences and artwork, while I guide them in the process of self-discovery. I have experience working with acculturation, trauma (PTSD), behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), anxiety disorder, stress, and depression. View 13 Photos Besides using Art Therapy, I utilize Positive Psychology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques in my practice. My approach is patient-centered and trauma-informed. I offer both individual and group sessions. I am also an experienced visual artist and have years of experience teaching art and facilitating expressive art groups and workshops. If you are ready to explore the art-making process while processing and managing the challenges you are currently facing, contact me for individual sessions or join one of my groups.

I believe in transparency and honesty. I have experienced my own difficulties and challenges in life after 22 years in the U.S. Army and I am in recovery from PTSD and substance abuse. Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to be addicted to substances. It just happens. We are not weak, defective, useless, worthless, morally corrupt, or any other disparaging comments often said about individuals with a Substance Use Disorder. We are loving individuals that are just hurting inside. We want what everyone else wants....to just be accepted and needed for who we are. I use an eclectic approach to therapy; including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement, Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Just as each one of us are unique with our own individualistic personalities, I too believe therapy should be tailored to the individual. There is no one model that fits everyone. I have been there. After my return from my third combat deployment, I began abusing prescription medication and alcohol. Fortunately, I was blessed with the opportunity to get help. This journey has led me to dedicating my life to helping others experiencing similar difficulties. I don't have all of the answers, but I do know the way out.

Life can throw numerous curve balls, and sometimes we need to expand our support system to persevere and carry on. Life can be challenging at times. Whether it’s from patterns of thinking or behaving we’ve carried with us since childhood, or relationship dynamics we’ve forged, or hurdles we’ve encountered in our day-to-day journey, or lingering trauma, sometimes we can feel stuck. We may even lose a sense of our own identity along the way, and that “lost” feeling brings experiences of anxiety, stress, sadness, fear, physical struggles, or more. It can be helpful to find a safe space to explore our thoughts and feelings, and counseling can offer an objective perspective, thought-provoking questions, and help in discovering the way forward. I see counseling as a collaborative process in which I support and empower you to explore perspectives, beliefs, and behaviors in a safe, non-judgmental context. I'll also challenge unhealthy patterns that arise and help you grow in self-awareness to embrace new possibilities. I’ll also integrate mindfulness, contemplation, communication skills, & self-care. I have counseled individuals and couples for over 30 years in a professional pastoral role. In recent years, I've expanded my clinical therapeutic development so that I might offer more specialized assistance with various issues. I have also served as Adjunct Faculty in a university Clinical Mental Health Counseling department.
