I offer psychotherapy, with a focus on managing difficulties and learning from life's struggles. Together we reach an understanding of what you're experiencing, and create solutions geared toward easing your discomfort. When we are receptive to the voice of the unconscious, through exploration of dreams and struggles, we can find inner wisdom to meet life's challenges. I work with teenagers and adults, either individually, couples, or families. I focus on relationship issues, anxiety, depression, work and career issues, spiritual issues, and the development of well-being and happiness. I have a special interest in working with people undergo treatment for cancer, and their caregivers. These are difficult times for many. I look forward to connecting with you and helping you manage the stresses of our times, and assisting you in creating the life you desire.

A valuable lesson I received in therapy was that not listening to my intuition led to distress. Many of us disregard our inner voice in favor of external messages containing judgments about our size, race, gender, sexual orientation, and how we express our emotions. This attempt to cope with the world around us and to fit in leads us to devalue and move further from our true selves. I help my clients sift through these messages to find their voice again and move closer to their authentic selves. When we begin to know ourselves better, we can navigate through the world more confidently and build more genuine relationships. I meet my clients where they are at, while gently encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones. I provide a grounded presence so my client’s feel safe to share their experiences. At my client’s discretion, I incorporate movement, humor, and creative methods including poetry, art, and music. I enjoy working with couples and individuals of all ages. I would be honored to be a part of your journey. Please contact me with any questions about how I work or how therapy works in general. I am accepting clients for in-person or online counseling.

As an openly transgender therapist, I know it can be difficult to find the right person to confide in. Wanting to be loved and accepted doesn’t make you needy, or extra, or selfish, or weak. It makes you human. To me, you are not just some random psychology textbook or theory. In our work together, my focus is to build goals and a relationship where you feel comfortable exploring what you think, feel, want, and need. My style as a therapist is warm, relaxed, and conversational. I use playfulness, imagery, art, metaphors, curiosity, creativity, self-compassion, and humor when appropriate to support the therapeutic process. I work with everyone in the gender-diverse, LGBTQIA2S+, and sex-positive community. I specialize in anxiety, depression, PTSD, teens, young adults, adults, and families (including foster care). I have worked with severe mental health, and homelessness crisis.

Are you ready for a positive change? Tired of doing the same thing and expecting different results? While we cannot change our past, or our genetic predispositions, we can learn to change the way we respond and react to our emotions and triggers; in order to give them less power and control in our lives. Learning about your unique experiences, needs and goals, and responding with caring and empathy, I will walk with you in exploring the barriers that you feel are hindering you, and provide therapeutic support, counseling and tools to help you acheive your goals. I specialize in helping people break destructive patterns of coping through the use of practical, evidenced-based coping skills and personal process. I am extensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). When individuals, families or couples feel stuck, I help them get back on track. I am committed to building a strong alliance with my clients, creating a safe environment to process loss or trauma, teaching positive coping skills and accessing your internal strengths to bring about lasting change that enables you to lead a live that is deeply fulfilling and meaningful.

Do you feel life is restricting you from who you really want to be for yourself, your partner and/or your family? My primary goal in therapy is to help enhance your ability to make choices. Our ability to notice our cycles of interaction in our relationships can help us build trust in ourselves and enhance our commitments to ourselves and our loved ones. This, in turn, allows our choices to become "building blocks" toward lasting joy for each relationship creation of our choice. As a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist, (EFT), I use Dr. Sue Johnson's attachment, empirically-based model to join my client's journey and better understand their relationship distress. Translating the "music" of the client's cycle of interaction through an attachment longing lens, promotes de-escalation and deepened engagement with partner and self. My niche is in helping individuals, couples and families both inside and outside my own faith-based religious practice. I also offer telehealth services for those who reside in California as well as in person sessions. Come join me as I welcome you to the world of Emotionally Focused Therapy!

I specialize in working with people who have complicated relationships with their bodies. My patients come to me because they are interested in: addressing eating issues before they turn into a full-blown eating disorder; learning to live better with medical problems; reconsidering their use of alcohol and drugs; or learning to live in their bodies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or non-binary individuals. Many of my patients have also been through difficult or even traumatic events, that at times have made their bodies feel unsafe. I help my patients to reestablish a sense of trust and safety in their bodies. I draw from psychodynamic approaches, which emphasize how past experiences and relationships shape our present reality. However, in my experience, insight is rarely sufficient to produce change — we also must change our actions. To this end, I am trained in cognitive and behavioral therapies. I also love reading the latest psychological research. Between August 2023 and July 2024 my practice will be virtual only, open to residents of California and Washington, D.C.

In my practice I blend together the art and science of psychotherapy with a strong focus on global change. My intention is to help you thrive. I use a comprehensive approach with a strong mind-body focus and integrate psychoanalysis with neuroscience. This helps to interpret properly and work more efficiently toward transforming maladaptive mechanisms that stifle your life. Often I use Neurofeedback, Biofeedback, and Photobiomodulation and work directly and noninvasively with the brain and the nervous system. This helps you self-regulate and embody change quicker, with less distress. In most cases the results are permanent. Due to the brain plasticity wonderful changes can take place at any time during your lifetime. That is why I work with people of all ages, from infancy through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. I specialize in reducing and eliminating symptoms of: PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, OCD, Learning disorders, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Addictions, and Pain. My approach is holistic and noninvasive. I have helped many adults and children to reduce the amounts of medications they were taking, and in many cases become medication free.

I believe that healthy people seek counseling. Taking time to honestly explore our thoughts and feelings about life is a respected tradition in virtually every culture and faith tradition. Therapy can be pursued not only to handle problems, but also to find more meaning in life, to live with more energy and zest and to increase the joy of being alive. Feel free to visit my website (www.DrFlathman.com) to learn more about me and the services I offer. Building a meaningful therapeutic relationship is at the heart of my approach. A healthy therapy relationship opens our eyes to experience life in new and growthful ways. The dominant traditions that inform my work are psychodynamic approaches, especially object relations therapy, self psychology, and Jungian therapy.

Whoever you are, whether it be struggling with relationship issues, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, grief and loss, all the way to trying to come to terms with a more persistent diagnosis, I cannot wait to meet you exactly where you are at. I invite you to reach out to me in this time, as hard as that may be. Because this truly is the hardest part. And know that if we are not a good fit, I can direct you to other therapists that can hopefully be exactly what you need. Let's be real, choosing a therapist is pretty hard. I am someone that will work to find the right therapeutic focus for your sessions. I will collaborate with you to work on goals that you set for yourself. Short term goals are my favorite, long term goals are important too though. I really love emotion-focused and solution-focused work! My goal from our first interaction to our last is to give you a safe space to feel heard and validated. A space to laugh, cry, and feel all the feels in between. I promise to work myself out of a job, giving you all the tools to empower you to fire me when you do not need therapy anymore. But until that day, I promise to be on your team.

Psychotherapy provides an opportunity to reflect on the deeper dimensions of your experience, and to recognize your own unique callings in life. The goal in existential therapy is to experience greater freedom in making the choices that empower you to be the kind of person you most want to be. Psychological freedom is twofold: freedom from the unwarranted fears, anxieties and assorted forms of emotional distress that constrict our life engagements, and at the same time, a freedom to engage in the vital relationships, creative activities, and genuine responsibilities that characterize a meaningful and fulfilling life. I have over thirty of years experience as a therapist treating individuals suffering from a wide range of problems, and as a university professor teaching existential, narrative, and archetypal approaches in clinical psychology.

It is an honor to accompany individuals into the psyche where our deepest wounds are sometimes hidden. Healing energies can often be found in those depths, stimulating growth toward a more whole, authentic and satisfying existence. Sometimes the pain is on the surface, and symptom relief is necessary to allow the individual to return to a more effective functioning level. This can be accomplished through a combination of cognitive approaches (i.e., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and body-centered approaches (i.e., focusing, embodied dream work, mindfulness). I have a background in Jungian-based psychotherapy, client centered therapy and other evidence-based practices. My clientele includes individuals with serious psychological issues as well as those primarily interested in furthering their own personal or spiritual growth. I am sensitive to the profound impact of past trauma on current happiness and success. With over 50 years of regular practice and teaching of Transcendental Meditation, an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies, and a Ph.D. with emphasis in depth psychology, I am comfortable working with individuals from all religious traditions as well as those seeking their own path toward spirituality.
