A person usually comes to therapy because they find themselves stuck in some way; perhaps an emotion that keeps surfacing, an addiction, or finding themselves in the same type of relationship or conflict over and over. Tired of same painful repetitions, yet unsure what to do to create change. I see my role as a therapist as assisting you in figuring out what’s getting in your way from making the changes you’d like to see. I facilitate a process through which you can create a more interconnected understanding of the different parts of your life and self. Such explorations can have a big impact on how a person feels and promote new ways of being in the world. What does this look like? A conversation. A space where you can talk about anything you'd like. We'll identify themes, patterns and experiences that are tied to the issues you’d like to work on, noticing the many—often surprising—places their effects show up and can covertly guide your day-to-day life.

Being truly heard and seen are two of the most healing experiences we can ever have. Being able to share authentically ourselves with another person, without judgement, is a gift that keeps on giving. Do you feel truly heard and seen in your relationships? Are you out of the closet, but do you still feel guilt or shame about your identity? Are you sober curious? Have you been harmed by religion, but want to connect more spiritually? Do you feel trapped in a pattern of choices that, while you recognize aren’t supportive, you continue making despite the negative consequences? I can relate. I’ve been there. I'm a humanistic and client-centered LGBTQ-affirmative therapist. My primary area of focus includes helping gay men heal past pain so that they wake up feeling a greater sense of purpose, self-acceptance, and belonging. I also specialize in working with people who specifically want spirituality to be a resource in their therapy. What I've learned from my own healing journey is that just like physical exercise, unless we do the work, we won’t see the results. I use a combination of both Western and Eastern philosophies in my therapeutic approach. If you're ready to gain a greater sense of purpose, healing, self-acceptance, and belonging, reach out today.

Psychotherapy can be a challenging and rewarding process. People often come to treatment to talk about what's wrong, but it is also important to talk about what's right. Each person has natural areas of strength we can capitalize on to increase coping skills, reduce distress, improve relationships, and develop a more adaptive outlook. With a collaborative approach that combines insight-oriented and goal-directed interventions, we will work together to create new pathways towards well-being. I conduct therapy with adolescents and adults of all ages, with a particular interest in issues of identity development and relationships. As a behavioral scientist, I also conduct studies that evaluate the effectiveness of mental health and substance use interventions--this means I consistently apply the latest evidence-based methods to your treatment. I hold a Ph.D. from New York University. I received clinical training from the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University and the Mount Sinai Health System. I completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in substance abuse at UCSF. I am currently a tenured professor at SDSU, adjunct behavioral scientist at RAND, and a core scientist at UCLA.

I enjoy working with clients who are looking to explore new ways to understand themselves, their relationships, and the reasons for their distress. I think that most of our depression, anxiety, or trauma responses come from a place of protectiveness and if we can learn to have empathy for ourselves in these reactions, we can learn to choose when to double-down and when to let go. I specialize in identity-affirming Cognitive-Behavior Therapy. This means I work with clients to better understand how your identity (race, gender, sexual orientation, etc) is informing your experience in the world. I work collaboratively with clients to build a stronger foundation of your own identity and to integrate this into your life outside of therapy. Choosing to begin therapy is a daunting process and I understand that you likely have lots of questions. I'm happy to schedule a brief phone consultation with anyone interested in learning more about my work and my therapy practice.

I help my clients learn and enhance their abilities to utilize their own strengths in order to overcome issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, substance abuse, and daily or work related stress. I put in a strong effort to connect with my clients and create a working alliance. The treatment I provide is a collaborative process where we will work together for positive changes. I've spent the seven years training and working with clients at institutions such as New York Presbyterian Hospital, the William Alanson White Institute, New York University, and Cornell Medical College.
