In my practice, I work successfully with people suffering from depression and anxiety, grappling with life changes and decisions, and struggling in important relationships. My orientation strives to deepen insight and self-knowledge, identify entrenched and sometimes destructive patterns in life, draw on your inner strengths, and move towards greater fulfillment in yourself and your relationships. See my website for much more information about my background, experience, and orientation to therapy. There I also offer suggestions for how to go about finding a good therapist who is both skilled and a fit for you. I have extensive experience working with people who have experienced trauma in their lives and, when indicated, I facilitate adjunct forms of treatment to work with the ongoing effects of trauma. When medication might be a useful in conjunction with psychotherapy I work closely with a psychiatric colleague as a therapeutic team. My own research, publications, and college-level teaching informs my sub-specialty in the psychology of religion and culture. When desired I can engage and explore cultural, religious, or spiritual concerns of any orientation within therapy.

I work with adolescents, adults, and seniors experiencing depression, anxiety, and issues related to parenting, trauma, technology/social media use, peer conflict, intimate partner violence/conflict, and major life transitions (eg. first-time parenting, leaving for college, returning to work, divorce, empty nest). I created and taught a graduate-level course at Johns Hopkins on social media's effect on mental health. My clinical training focused on survivors and offenders of sexual and domestic violence. I was awarded a fellowship for my work with teen moms on parenting, life skills, and college readiness. I use solution-focused and evidence-based techniques (i.e. CBT, ACT, positive psychology) that capitalize on clients’ innate strengths. I operate from a systems mentality appreciating the role of environment in personal challenges. My goal is to establish a collaborative relationship built on trust to help my clients build their inner resources. We all want to be able to handle life's challenges but flawed emotional, behavioral, or thought patterns can sometimes leave us feeling lost. We need help to see things clearly, identify options, and navigate a path that leads to the life we want. I will help you clear the weeds and develop a plan for achieving personal goals that builds on your strengths.

I specialize in betrayal trauma, affair recovery for couples, as well as sex and porn addiction for male/female and Mother Hunger. Have you hit the “work required” part of your relationship? I am trained to address intimacy issues and support you to restore healing and peace. Our space will be a place where we work to understand the "why" around what is happening in your life and where we identify how to change what isn't working for you. Once we understand these origins, we can help you to highlight your strengths while overcoming the hurdles and challenges that are in the way of your life goals, happiness, and daily peace. My professional experience varies from working in healthcare to education and therapy for youth & their families. I now work with adults & couples who deal with sex addiction, porn exposure/addiction, betrayal trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, life transitions and stress. For couples, I work to identify negative cycles & facilitate how to remove them. In today’s busy and disconnected world, it can be hard to distinguish between outside distractions and our inner monkey minds. The thoughts chattering noisily in our heads can lead to unhealthy habits, strain our relationships, and create toxic thought patterns. I work with clients to ‘quiet the monkeys’ with techniques and strategies to heal and thrive.

While a person can feel better after a good talk with a friend or relative, for moderate or severe distress, this relief is only temporary. At those times, it is beneficial to talk with a trained counselor who listens and interacts in a way to get to the very root for your emotional concerns. I offer my clients an opportunity to face their difficulties confidently and constructively; freeing them to enjoy all the good things life has to offer. I understand the importance of building a trusted relationship and work with each client to develop an individual plan that meets their goals whether it be learning to manage their grief, navigating a life transition, facing a diagnosis, improving their relationships or building self esteem.

There are times when we outgrow our current coping skills and need to refocus our energy and will. Balancing our ways we survive is key by using different strategies and techniques that are carved out for each one of us. Being an art therapist and a clinical social worker, I believe that in my work with children, adolescents, and adults a way exists in finding the best self that is somewhere within themselves. Using cognitive behavioral therapy with a client-centered focus, I can join with and provide an outlet for clients to share experiences and work together to foster an improved sense of self and well-being. I have been working with clients with various needs ranging from ADHD, to anxiety, depression, mood, personality and traumatic experiences, to help them as I approach with an open mind and kind, non-judgmental regard for all. Art materials can be incorporated into the sessions as needed and experimentation with different media is known to relax and engage. A thorough assessment will be administered at the first visit to gather demographic information and the presenting needs to determine the best course of treatment. Building a relationship is the strongest and most effective way to help! Offering daytime and some evening hours, I am flexible to schedule. I am providing virtual sessions at this time only.

Usually, when we're facing challenges that feel overwhelming, we crave understanding and acceptance...someone who will listen, provide support and stand side by side with us as we navigate our way through murky waters. We also long for relief from whatever is causing us pain - from harmful behaviors or confusing situations to emotions or thoughts that feel out of control. We want to feel better and to be free - free to take pleasure in the joys and triumphs of our lives and free to live our lives with the confidence that we have the tools and resources to cope with whatever pain may appear. I have experience working in a variety of specialized areas, including mindfulness, DBT, depression and anxiety, women's issues, trauma, substance abuse and addiction, workplace stress, divorce and perinatal mood disorders. Ultimately, however, it’s the relationship between you and me that makes the difference. It’s hard enough to ask for help in the first place, so I want to recognize the courage it could have already taken to get here. At the end of the day, this is about what you need, including making sure I’m the right fit for what you’re looking for. If I am, we’ll walk this path together and I’ll be by your side every step of the way.

Our individual experiences play a role in shaping our personalities, how we see the world, and how we view ourselves. My goal is to help increase your self-awareness through self-exploration and world-exploration. This approach requires openmindedness, flexibility, and hard work. As a poet, I take a creative approach to nearly all I do, particularly therapy. Life is all about balance and therapy can be emotionally draining work. So I like to make therapy as fun and interesting as possible. I love working with people who are willing to learn, are open to trying new things, who want to grow and like to have fun in the process. As a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, I have been trained in trauma-focused CBT with specialties in  PTSD, Depression, Anxiety and Interpersonal Relationships. I obtained a bachelor's degree (Psychology) from UMUC and a master's degree (Clinical Mental Health Counseling) from Johns Hopkins University. Therapy can be hard and emotionally draining work, it can feel as though things are getting worse before they get better. It is a commitment; a commitment of loving and caring for self and others; a difficult journey but one that is rewarding and freeing. As a wife of 17 years, a mother of three, and a trauma survivor I get it, as a therapist, I can help.

Are you worried about your child? Do you feel at a loss as a parent? Is your relationship suffering? Does your family feel disconnected? Not sure what to do, where to turn? I work with kids in grades 1-5 who are struggling. Has your sweet loving 6 year old turned into a grumpy cranky brat, has your hard working focused 10 year old started not turning in homework, has your out going fun loving 8 year old stopped playing with friends and closed himself in his bedroom. Change is possible; together we can turn tough times into total triumphs. I am a trained play therapist and use nature in my clinical experience working with kids who are experiencing a parent's divorce, death of a loved one, abuse, ADHD, or school anxiety. When we connect with nature we feel calm, protected and engaged which is the perfect platform to build strength, resilience and compassion so children can thrive. Working with young children is very rewarding because they enjoy exploring and playing. They talk with me through their play and we are able to explore feelings in a fun non-threatening therapeutic way that leads to resolution. Parent involvement in the process is the key component for success.
