How would your life look if your worries weren't in control? If you could plan each day to fit your dreams rather than your anxiety? I help people whose anxiety interferes with the life they want to live. We’ll begin where you are, helping you change your relationship with your emotions, allowing you more room to enjoy life. You might feel lighter when you learn to let go of the struggle. Activities become a little easier. Laughter may flow more freely. Best of all, you'll have more time for what matters. Contact me if you want to start suffering less and living more. I treat clients with kindness and apply evidence-based behavioral therapy. Activities: Presenter at Spectrum Health Behavioral Medicine Symposium, 2017 and 2019; CBT continuing education presenter at Meijer Heart Center, 2017; Co-author of grief support article, Praxis, Loyola University Chicago peer-reviewed journal, 2009; Family Outreach Emp. of Yr., 2010. I enjoy helping and learning from individuals of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and alliances. I consider therapy a partnership. You can expect to be heard and taken seriously. Your time is valuable, and my goal is to help you make progress while treating you with the warmth and concern I would want for a family member.

Some people will never understand what it is like to be raised by parents who don’t see you. The pain you feel when they put everything and everyone before you. How small and invisible it made you feel when they ignore the love you have for them and choose “it” instead. The “it” could have been drugs, partners, friends, siblings, work, etc…no matter what you did they never seemed to choose you. You may have even had to take care of your parents and become a 2nd parent to your siblings. You found yourself making excuses about why they were not present, why they forgot, and then you learned to numb the pain. Now you are at a point where it’s becoming more difficult to numb the feelings and to hide your hurt; you want to let go of the hurt/pain from the past. Maybe you have trouble engaging with your parents because they haven’t changed, they still attempt to make you parent them and minimize your needs. They may even try to treat you as if you are still a child. I specialize in therapy for adult children of emotionally immature parents. The work I do is centered in inner child healing, nurturing you through those memories of a stolen childhood. Inner child healing is about relearning innocence, experiencing safety, validating your feelings, accepting joy, and creating a deep sense of worth.

I believe that therapy is a process of sharing expertise and experience- you share your expertise and experiences from your life with me, I share my expertise and experiences with mental health and emotional well-being with you, & together we help you develop tools and strategies needed to live your best life. I have extensive experience working with children & families, survivors of abuse/neglect/trauma, ADHD, anxiety/depression. I work with LGBTQ+ youth & adults, & help caretakers of LGBTQ+ youth learn how to support a child questioning their identity. I am an anti-racist therapist & will always consider the impact systems of oppression have on mental health. I am neurodivergent, diagnosed in adulthood, and am passionate about helping others explore potential signs of neurodivergence that could be creating undue hardships in their life. I have a casual conversation style that helps make therapy feel less intimidating. If you are looking to gain clarity and insight surrounding your personal situation and life goals, I can help. Some people call me a professional hype-woman, but you can call me your therapist.

Life can be hard at times, and going at it alone makes it harder. Having someone who will listen and who you can trust can mean the world. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I strive to help clients work through past and current issues by forming a relationship built on genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard. My passion to create a safe atmosphere allows clients to feel heard and to focus on their goals. Practicing through an eclectic lens of counseling approaches, I try to provide the tools and guidance that allow clients to work through any issue they need help with. As a counselor, I have a laid back, relaxed and informal style. I believe that a large part of what creates change is having a great connection with your counselor, something I strive for with all of my clients. While my main focus is on addiction, spiritual counseling and men’s issues (fatherhood, being a husband, gender roles, etc.), I am trained on a wide range of mental health and life issues and would be excited to work with you on any that may be challenging you. Reaching out is the first step. While it can be scary, I know you will not regret it. Regardless of your faith, sexual identity, race or gender identity, I am here for you. I would be honored to join you in a journey towards helping you achieve your goals. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, two children and dog. My favorite activities are kayaking the river, spending time in nature, reading and trying new restaurants. I also enjoy dry humor, pranks, animals and anything nerdy.

How many times have those close to you tried to tell you what you should do? Do you feel like no one is really listening to your story? I strive to provide a space to be heard without being forced to conform to someone else's individual biases. You are the expert of your life: you live it. I'm an expert on process, and I want to help you find what change looks like in your life. I love the power of story, and your story is unique and rich. I tend not to subscribe to just one theoretical orientation simply because there is no "one size fits all" method of counseling. Rather, I draw from many different theories to devise a plan that will be the most helpful for you. My goal is to create the safest space possible: the one place where you'll never feel judged or criticized. Also, I am an Army vet, so I have a special place in my heart for vets and their families. I offer a discount for vets and their immediate families.

My name is Dr. Tonia Webster, and I have 20+ years of experience working with highly complex trauma. My approach is eclectic but driven from a holistic and cognitive behavioral model. In my practice, I look at the whole person and not simply the trauma or crisis in which has steered you in my direction. From a person centered and strength based approach, I believe that we have untapped strength and resilience in which we can learn to utilize in a timely and effective manner to live our best life. Together, we will address what may be holding you back from living and not just surviving. I am highly experienced working with both youth and adults. I am a certified clinical trauma specialist with an extensive background in trauma informed care. Additionally, I have a certification in mental health integrative medicine that helps me tap into a more holistic approach to addressing various issues such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and more. There is no straight road, but rather hills and valleys and different seasons of change that I would love to help you navigate through in order to achieve your goals. This starts with providing a safe and professional relationship to assist you with overcoming the fears in life that may be holding you back. I am here to assist you with this journey.

Do you feel like you can’t escape harmful patterns, are spinning in anxiety, or unable to find real joy? Are you struggling to understand why you can’t create the change you want to see in your life? For many of us, the root of our most difficult feelings and harmful patterns are emotional wounds we still harbor deep inside. The process of uncovering and learning about our personal histories can help us move through the pains that are buried within us, and towards the life you want. My approach to therapy is warm, affirming, nonjudgmental and inquisitive. I practice somatic therapy which involves helping clients pay attention to their physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts, and using those cues to promote healing and growth. I believe that an attunement to the body’s signals is a powerful tool in the therapeutic process. My work has taught me that individuals have the answers they need within themselves and tuning into those answers in the body can use a little support. If you are ready to tap into the wisdom that you already hold, I invite you to reach out. You deserve a safe, comfortable space to process and feel, and to find the joy you’re looking for.

I designed my website, howarderman.com, for people considering psychotherapy and I think my mini-essay, Thoughts on How to Choose a Therapist, will help you even if you end up working with someone else. My own style is relaxed, engaged, sensitive and thoughtful as we explore current problems and underlying issues. I believe if our self-understanding is limited, we keep defeating ourselves in our actions, like being stuck in a hole and trying to dig our way out when that is the only action certain to get us in even deeper. With insight, support, and hard work, change begins. My strength is a flexible approach informed by psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral and family systems work. My training and experiences are unusually broad and deep: three years psychodynamic internship at University of Michigan Psychological Clinic, then twenty years as a Director of Partial Hospital Programs prior to returning to full-time private practice. I now teach the theory and practice of psychotherapy to clinician practitioners in Madonna University's Master level program, including family systems, couples, cognitive-behavioral, and humanistic therapy. Still, I am repeatedly humbled by how each unique individual is more complex than any one theory. Psychotherapy remains a joint process.

Many of my clients are looking for new ways of handling stress in their lives, are working to heal from difficult early experiences, or are seeking to improve their intimate relationships. Together, we can observe stuck patterns with curiosity, heal old wounds, and experiment with new ways of relating to yourself and others. I deeply enjoy helping people see themselves in a new light and experience increased wellbeing in their relationships. As a relationship therapist, I help partners reduce conflict and develop a secure bond using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Working with individuals and couples, I help us care for all parts of you through "parts work" or Internal Family Systems (IFS). I am also trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy for the treatment of trauma and developmental wounds. Please note: My practice is currently full. I am not accepting new clients at this time.

My targeted population includes tween, teens, and young adults. I enjoy working with clients that feel ready to work towards their goals and is here for themselves, not because someone is forcing them. I pull heavily from a strength-based approach to help clients use their resiliency to get through the inevitable ups and downs of life. I understand that therapy can be an uncomfortable and difficult journey for people. Because of this, I place a large emphasis on rapport building and work to balance going at your pace while also challenging you to embrace discomfort. My primary modalities are cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, and solution-focused. Additionally, I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and utilize this modality for 6-18 year old's and their guardians who have experienced trauma. I understands that therapy can be an uncomfortable and difficult journey for people. I will walk alongside you to encourage you to take one step forward and do things that although might be scary, will empower you to say “I did it!”

My main areas of focus are persistent pain conditions, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss and chronic illness. Having found that a variety of modalities are more effective than one specific approach, I engage a complement of therapeutic techniques including; mind/body, evidence-based options such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) along with a blend of integrative, psychodynamic and person-centered therapies. I am dedicated to providing non-judgmental, compassionate support in a truly collaborative environment. Emotional, spiritual, social, and behavioral factors directly affect health. Physical illness and other bodily struggles impact emotional well-being. Finding the inter-connectedness between mind, body, and spirit plays a vital role in the psychotherapeutic process. It is through this discovery that the journey to optimum healing can begin. If you're living with the challenges of anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, fibromyalgia, back or pelvic pain, migraines, arthritis, chronic fatigue or any centralized pain syndrome - let your path to wellness begin here and now.

(As a couple or individual) - Experiencing a traumatic event, anxiety/ past pain can send you into a panic, tearful, angry, shut down. Feeling disconnected from yourself or from your partner. Stress feels so intense that sometimes it moves you to withdrawal. Or it rises into agitation: why doesn't my partner see my pain? Why did this/does this conflict/"bad thing" happen? What if it happens again? Feeling distrustful that anyone will be there for you either because you have been let down by someone before (maybe your partner) or have experienced something painful/traumatic & fear it will happen again. Feeling lonely and ignored. You’re looking for an emotional connection to your partner, heal after pain you endured together, to feel loved. Or individually you would like to move past the painful event(s)/trauma you have endured, learn to love yourself & remove the fear that weighs you down, to feel free from anxiety. Either in couples therapy or individual therapy, I can help. I view my role as a therapist as being part of a team with you for success. I believe we all have the power within ourselves for change; I just have the privilege to help ignite that power to bring change with you, together. I probably don’t need to tell you we’re living in a racist, sexist, heteronormative, capitalist dystopian nightmare in a slow and painful collapse. It’s hard to cope with that knowledge while dealing with day-to-day nonsense, on top of reliving past trauma on a regular basis. It’s a lot and it’s heavy and it sucks. Some people turn to substances and other vices to cope. Mindfulness techniques can help to stay in the present and stay grounded and not feel so anxious about what the future holds. EMDR can help to address past trauma, and to stop living in toxic cycles. There are many paths to recovery and harm reduction is absolutely valid. I'm trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques for an individualized approach. When you’re not reliving past trauma, and you’re not constantly anxious about the future, and you’ve let go of toxic coping strategies, then dealing with all of the day-to-day nonsense starts to feel a bit less overwhelming. Let’s get you there.

To me, spirit is about what is inside you regardless of your circumstances. My goal for providing therapy is teaching people how to function within how their lives actually are; good or bad, struggle or peace, history of trauma or not. Faith is a crucial part of it. In Acts 27 Paul is on a boat being tossed by a terrible storm. He tells the crew we should not have sailed BUT NOW we can manage the storm. In the Buddhist Eight Fold path Right Judgment is make choices based on how things truly are and not driven by emotion. The storm teaches us things and makes us stronger. View 4 Photos EMDR is available for both adults and children to help process memories that cause strong emotions. TF-CBT is available for children to help them express their emotions and tell their story in a safe environment (not to mention that there is lots of play!). Family therapy helps families learn the purpose in behavior and how to manage the storm of stress. If you are a fan of Doctor Who you may remember the 11th doctor say "900 years of time and space and I never met anyone who wasn't important." Everyone's life experience is important and I want people feel that their life experience matters. Don't assume that "what happened to me wasn't that big of a deal." It may be more important that you think.

Sometimes we try to decide how something should be before actually experiencing it; our journey through counseling will help redirect and ground any preconceived notions of how to experience life. For counseling to be effective, both you and I must be actively involved in developing counseling goals and assessing progress towards a state of positive mental health. As a person centered therapist, rather than analyzing what is wrong with you or subjecting your feelings and behaviors to analytical interpretation, I give you the room to access your own wisdom so I can support you with navigating and finding solutions to life’s problems. Depending on your individual needs, I will tailor the treatment to you by merging therapy practices with your hobbies and daily activities. Homework may be utilized at times to focus on methods of self-discovery and expression. Sessions will focus on subjects such as: self-awareness, choice, meaning of life, strengths/limitations, acceptance, and change. I strive to provide a space to allow you to grow and become the best version of yourself. I will challenge you in a caring and empathetic manner to look at yourself in a kind way. I remind you to seek alternative options and strategies for handling life. Expect a lot of penguin and nerd-based references. We can shape this space to seek your authentic self.
