During our sessions, my clients can expect a compassionate atmosphere that encourages creativity and growth. Clients of all gender identities can safely explore their feelings without fear of invalidation or gatekeeping. I support my clients in making meaning of their life experiences and building resilience in stressful times. My style of therapy combines creative problem-solving with self-reflection and affirmation. I also connect my clients to harm reduction resources and gender-affirming transition medicine. We all experience "stuckness" sometimes and feel disconnected from those we love most. Maybe you find yourself revisiting the same old territory in your mind on a loop, and find that it is hard to make a change on your own. Or maybe you have faced a moment of rupture in a close relationship, and find your world torn apart. Perhaps you are noticing unhelpful patterns in yourself or your relationships, and are now feeling ready to explore them. Or you might find yourself avoiding social situations, even though you have a sense it might help you feel better. I have over 15 years of experience as a therapist and clinical supervisor. I studied for several years at the Ackerman Institute for the Family to learn about family/couples therapy, and am currently training in AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), where I am learning to help people change through accessing core emotions. I feel honored to be invited into work with my clients, who are bravely facing parts of themselves that they may at times prefer to avoid. I try to bring warmth, humor and transparency to my relationships with clients. I love my work and feel energized to be part of a process of real and profound change.

I have been trained in many approaches to therapy and I believe that it is my role to work collaboratively with my clients to find the approach that works best for them. I believe that healing takes place in the context of the relationship between therapist and client and that an important part of the work is developing a connection where one feels truly seen and heard. I also believe in helping my clients get in touch with deeper levels of awareness of their bodies/emotions and helping them to incorporate mindfulness practices into their lives. I specialize in working with issues of sexuality, relationships, and gender. I enjoy work with adolescents, adults, and couples. In addition to therapy, I do assessments for hormones/surgery for transgender clients. Usually I require 2-3 sessions before completing my assessment.

Truth is essential to our mental integrity. Full access to the "truths" embedded in our personal stories and the emotions, beliefs and healthy impulses they engender make us "whole". They form the basis of our identity, resilience, self-worth; our very well being. The problem: our "truths" sometimes appear overwhelmingly painful, disheartening and/or terrifying, particularly if safe/trustworthy people haven't been available to help. In order to cope, real feelings are buried, "looking good" facades created and the past (consciously) ignored. Unfortunately, dissociating these truths creates a life that lacks choice and is instead stubbornly ruled by the past. Years of training in psychodrama, EMDR and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy have taught me that simply "talking" about problems is an inefficient way to promote change. In my work, I will accompany you through the process of regaining access to your innate strengths and resources. Together, we can come to terms with avoided emotions, thoughts, and memories that have kept you stuck, transforming anger to assertiveness, fear to self protection, grief to acceptance and apathy to passion. With the missing pieces back in place, your focus in life can move from surviving to thriving.

We all share the basic human need to achieve self-actualization. In order to improve, we must first understand what we are working with. Therapy provides a safe and trusting space to explore ourselves as a whole, separate from our own judgements. I practice and teach mindfulness as a method to gain self-awareness that produces change in the way we interact with ourselves and our environment.  Therapy is a beautiful path to recognize your own power while simultaneously removing the power we have assigned to thoughts or behaviors. I have extensive experience providing therapy in both hospital and community settings. I specialize in treating addiction, anxiety, depression, and anger management. As a clinician, I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Somatic Therapy. I am certified to practice Mindfulness. My goal is to help improve clients’ overall wellbeing by reducing reactions to anxiety, stress, sadness and anger.

Joanna’s approach is informed by her training in trauma therapy, attachment therapy, EMDR, IFS and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I am a licensed clinical social worker who uses a warm, inviting, and nonjudgmental approach to help adults explore, understand, and make changes in difficult circumstances. I am trained in evidence-based modalities as well as relational therapy, allowing me to better help my clients. Whether you are feeling shaken by a major change or loss in your life, long term feelings of loneliness, or feel overwhelmed by your worries or your relationships, I've seen talk therapy help people feel more grounded, certain of themselves, and better able to manage their emotions. Effective therapy is highly individualized. I integrate my training in CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing, as well as a more psychodynamic framework, to best meet the needs of my clients. I've found including exploration around cultural, racial, spiritual and gender experiences to be both illuminating and empowering for my clients. I consider myself a person-centered and dynamic therapist who is dedicated to meeting my clients where they are, helping them explore themselves with curiosity and care, and acting as a support throughout a variety of painful, frustrating, and totally joyful journeys we experience in life. Ready to talk about it? Let's start therapy together! I work with children, adolescents, and adults all across the gender spectrum and in the LGBTQIA+ community. I provide education to families, discuss concerns related to gender and sexuality, and review the co-occuring mental health issues that sometimes accompany different gender identities. For trans individuals, the world of puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, gender-affirming surgeries, and changing name markers can be overwhelming—I'm here to help with that, too. I’m happy to write gender-affirming letters for procedures or institutions. My style is warm, strengths-based, and empowering. You will not be laying on a sofa (unless you really want to!). We are equals in our relationship: I won’t pretend to be an expert on your life, but I am a partner in your growth. Sessions will feel like conversations with a friend. Sometimes we’ll cry but I'll make that we laugh, too. I'm excited to get started in our work together! Reach out for a phone consultation.

Be true to yourself. I’m curious about what that phrase means to you and what is impeding your ability to live authentically. Perhaps you must untangle the past to move forward and flourish in the present. Or, explore who you are now to determine who you want to become in the future. No matter what brings you here specifically, my ultimate goal is to help you parse these queries and connect to your core self. While I specialize in trauma-focused therapies (e.g., EMDR), I have an extensive research background and draw from additional evidence-based practices to mitigate pain and embolden vitality.

Beginning or continuing therapy is not easy, especially when life already feels difficult. When your world is overwhelming or chaotic, numb or lifeless, I can help in addressing debilitating symptoms and finding ways to cope. At the same time, we can work together to identify unacknowledged emotions, fears, desires, and entrenched patterns so that you can form new ways of living with meaning and vitality. I aim to create a trusting, non-judgmental environment in which one feels safe enough to explore thoughts and feelings, to say whatever comes to mind. My experience includes working with people suffering from relationship conflicts, sexuality and identity, trauma, social isolation, job struggles, loneliness, immigration, eating issues, and substance use. We can look to the past to understand the present with the goal of creating reflective, long-lasting change in your lived experience. At Rose Hill Psychological Services, we accept many different types of insurance. Email or call to set up an initial appointment. Sean-Lynch.org
