I started in the field working as a substance abuse counselor intern conducting group therapy and individual therapy in an IOP/PHP setting. I had the experience working with court mandated clients. I have also worked in an inpatient substance abuse setting where I also conducted groups, facilitated lectures on recovery topics and provided individual therapy and case management. Following this position, I found myself in outpatient mental where I gained the most clinical experience working with a diverse population and treating a variety of issues. I have worked with children as young as 10, adolescents and adults up to age 65. My approach when treating all clients is tailored. I tend to be primarily cognitive based in my approach but I will often bring in other approaches from person centered, solutions focused, or REBT. I am direct and authentic within the therapeutic relationship which I believe fosters change within clients. My areas of focus are substance abuse disorders, dual diagnosis, grief and loss, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, life transitions, employment stress, trauma, and self-esteem issues.

You are the expert on your own life. Many believe that going to therapy is about someone else giving you the answers, but the truth is, therapy is all about someone coming alongside of you with support and encouragement so that you, the expert, can achieve the goals you want for your life. Therapy works because you choose it! My name is Ashley Slade and I am here to partner with you. As an eclectic/integrative therapist, I utilize many skills and techniques to advocate for you as an individual and for the situations that are present in your life. I will encourage your voice, verbally and nonverbally to enable self-expression, self-reflection, and self-awareness to help you build and maintain a positive sense of self. My psychotherapeutic approaches and interventions are humanistic, experiential, cognitive-behavioral, and psychoanalytic. My clinical lens is trauma informed – understanding that things happen to people, always believing your life narratives and recognizing that though there are steps to recovery, it isn’t easy. As a Movement Therapist, I focus on mind/body connection, facilitating breath-work, mindfulness and embodiment techniques.

You have exhausted your resources trying to solve your current challenges and are seeking outside counsel, maybe for the first time. It feels daunting, seeking out a stranger to share what has been going on and wondering where to start. You come with strengths like perseverance - it has gotten you this far and you continue to seek answers. You are curious and willing to ask questions. You have courage, to share what is happening, to come as you are. You are someone who appreciates learning and is open to new perspectives because as Einstein said - “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it." I am well versed in issues associated with Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families (ACOA), codependency, family of origin, grief & loss, chronic illness, career development, identity crises and significant life transitions. My approach is trauma-informed and strength-based. I incorporate mindfulness, DBT and other coping skills. I gained this experience working in several outpatient settings where the majority of individuals were diagnosed with co-occurring disorders. I believe in the healing power of listening and the ability of therapy to transform lives. It's the place where I can be my authentic self which allows others to feel safe to examine what they could not on their own.

Concerns related to sex and intimacy are some of the most sensitive and personal. Experiencing sexual concerns, such as low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, pelvic pain, or difficulty with orgasm no longer has to be secretive or embarrassing. Finding a therapist who is open, supportive, and has effective tools is imperative on the journey to satisfaction and pleasure. Using a Cognitive Behavioral & collaborative approach, I work with individuals or couples to help them further understand the concerns that effect them, their relationships, & their sexual functioning. Additionally, I treat children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing concerns related to communication, trauma, ADHD, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, divorce, parenting, life phase transitions, body image, self-esteem, and stress / burnout. I strive to help my clients feel in control of their lives and to reach their full potential. I began my career in Philadelphia, where I earned my Master’s Degree in Dance/Movement Therapy & a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Marriage & Family Therapy. In 2015, I founded Better Being Blue Bell & in 2018, after relocating to CT, I opened Better Being Connecticut. I maintain licensure in both states & provide virtual therapy.
