Life can throw us stressful and even traumatic experiences that can cause us to feel like we are in an emotional gridlock, trapped in a cycle of the same feelings, behaviors, and thoughts we want to become free of. I invite you to continue reading if you are ready to begin your journey to becoming “unstuck.” My non-pathologizing, no-shame approach emphasizes that all patterns of thinking and behavior, even those viewed as problematic, serve to protect unseen emotional pain. In understanding where these patterns originate, we can work to heal the underlying cause together, thereby providing you the space to construct the life you desire. I utilize an Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy approach, pulling from modalities like CBT and ACT as needed. Despite the name, IFS works well with individuals (no family involvement necessary). If this sounds like a good match, I encourage you to reach out for an appointment and start your path toward healing. I look forward to working with you.

I am a retired Navy Sailor who truly understands how both military and civilian life can bring on trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression. I have worked in the field of mental health, domestic and intimate partner violence, and sexual assault for over 12 years and hone in on how struggling with mental illness, trauma, stress, and anxiety can leave individuals feeling alone, stuck, or alienated. Understanding how self-defeating thoughts on top of the daily stressors an individual may experience as a person can be hard to manage; I inform my clients that l am here to help, support, strengthen, and navigate them to their best. I use a variety of theoretical approaches: Anger Management Therapy, Attachment Theory, Coaching, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The theoretical philosophies used in my work are person-centered, meaning that the work will be focused on what is most important to you, the client. I remind my clients that healing is continuous. I understand that therapy is a collaborative approach where you will receive positive warm regard and empathy. You will be in a safe place free from biases and judgments. Everyone is unique therefore the goals, strategies, skills, and techniques are designed for you as an individual. Let me know how I can support you as you start the journey to your healing.

I work with children who experience anxiety, sensory overwhelm, trouble getting to sleep after an exciting day, difficulty with changes in routine, are deeply attuned to others’ distress, and feel things very deeply. Highly sensitive children often are very attuned to their environment, have intense emotional responses, and struggle to emotionally regulate when they become overstimulated. Their sensitivity to the world around them can be a gift, but it can also lead to frequent over-stimulation and an increased need for quiet time. I work with clients 3+ to teach them healthy ways to soothe anxiety, how to recognize when they need a break, build emotional regulation skills, and improve communication of intense feelings. I work collaboratively with families to help them appreciate this wonderful trait and teach them effective ways to respond to intense emotions. As a therapist, I love to incorporate creativity and mindfulness to engage and teach children important skills like emotional regulation. Play and art therapy harness children’s natural ability to learn through play in a supportive environment. I personalize my approach to each child to build on their strengths and interests in a way that they connect with.

I have experience working in a wide variety of clinical settings, including inpatient, community mental health centers, and schools (elementary through college). I approach therapy primarily through a Cognitive-Behavioral and Interpersonal lens, meaning much of the work in therapy is focused on identifying and reframing unhelpful thinking patterns and on exploring and strengthening interpersonal relationships. However, I realize that each client is unique, so I adjust my treatment approach to best fit each person's needs. Sometimes, beginning therapy can feel intimidating, and I strive to create a space where you can feel safe, comfortable, and supported discussing what is on your mind. I believe you are the expert on your life, and together, we can work towards overcoming challenges and obstacles that are getting in the way of your goals. Life has ups and downs, and I am here to help you through the periods when things aren't going the way you had hoped-for the times when you just don't feel like yourself.

What would it be like to experience the world, and yourself, without the assumption that you are a problem to be fixed? This is one of the questions I love to explore in my work with clients. I believe all people are inherently worthy, resilient, and capable of growth (Yep, even you). I work collaboratively with my clients to uncover their unique values and strengths while identifying practical strategies and resources to make life more comfortable now. I strive to create a warm, casual, and affirming environment for my clients. I use an anti-oppression framework and recognize that you are the expert on you (not me, not your parents, and certainly NOT the DSM). As a trans/non-binary therapist myself, I am profoundly grateful to be able to help other LGBTQ+ folks feel better and live expansively. Together, we will take a holistic approach to your mental health that promotes empowerment and feeling more agency with your mind and body. In our sessions, it is important to me that you are able to show up as your full self, unmask, relax the tension in your body, and be seen.

I believe there is meaning in symptoms. We are designed to thrive. When something is out of balance our mind/body/spirit/relationships present symptoms to ask us to pay attention. I specialize in helping people discover what needs their attention. Then, I help people learn new skills so they are equipped to respond more effectively to their needs. I offer support as people practice necessary changes in their thoughts, managing their emotions, and interacting with others and their circumstances. Finally, I encourage and guide people as they seek to fully actualize their potential. Anxiety, depression, anger, conflict, children acting out, feeling chronic stress, panic attacks, experiences of trauma, searching for meaning, feeling empty, hopeless or helpless - these are all flashing lights on the dashboard of life telling us that something is not working properly. We need to stop and address the issues. Discover. Practice. Thrive. My practice offers multiple modalities to support people in these areas.
