I am a social worker who specializes in couples and sexual-related issues. I do a lot of work with couples around infidelity, trust and sexual issues. I spend much time helping couples overcome the aftermath of affairs and help lead them to a better relationship than they previously had. I also work with individuals with problems like depression, anxiety and loss. I do my sessions exclusively by video and phone and have done teletherapy for about five years. My style is very casual and thoughtful. And I have become very adept at doing teletherapy. I find that most of my clients prefer this format. In couples work, I teach that communication is different for men and women. I help couples and individuals with sexual issues like lack of desire, performance anxiety, dysfunction, coming out issues and relationship types (consensual nonmonogamy and monogamy) and navigating these. I am looking forward to hearing from you. I know that sexual and relationship issues can be difficult to discuss, but with my style I think you'll feel quite comfortable talking with me. You will find reaching out for the initial conversation with me that I am not judgemental in the least and that you will feel at ease speaking with me.

I AM NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I am a psychotherapist, licensed as a clinical social worker, certified as an alcohol and drug counselor and TRE® provider, drawing on over 25 years of experience. My primary foundational belief is that our mind and body operate as one organism, which contains its own healing potential. I use evidence-based approaches (EMDR, TRE, IFS) to assist clients in the natural healing process that includes moving to a state of regulation in the nervous system and accessing the wisdom that already exists in a person’s brain chemistry and somatic experience. I find that it is a privilege and an honor to sit with people in partnership. My role is to facilitate the process that unfolds as people find their truth. It is my belief that therapy is a vehicle to help people create the reality they want for themselves, especially when they are feeling stuck/disconnected from the life they would like to live. If you would like to know more about the approaches I use you can access my website hinescounseling.com or look to these sites to see if this is a good fit for you. My work with clients is based on the holistic philosophy of transpersonal, humanistic, mindfulness, and depth psychology. I use a client-centric approach that honors the lived experience and inherent wisdom of my clients in the dimensions of mind, body, emotions, spirituality, creativity, and community. The therapeutic process is focused on facilitating a client's self-awareness, self-acceptance, curiosity, and courage to change. Clients who benefit most from this approach have a strong desire to heal, gain insight, and transform insight into action. View 4 Photos I help clients reduce dependence on the habitual use of survival strategies that no longer serve their needs. The core of humanistic-oriented therapy is to help clients find the courage to be authentic in their lives and to gain freedom through consciousness. I also help clients understand their brain and how to avoid being hijacked by unhelpful reactivity. If you are a highly sensitive person (HSP) please inquire about addressing the special needs of HSPs. I am also a rock climber and integrate lesson from this experience including facing fears, practicing mindfulness, engaging in problem solving, and cultivating humility. My HSP dog Sophie accompanies me at my Mammoth office.

*** CURRENTLY NOT TAKING NEW CLIENTS *** Therapy offers the opportunity to make lasting positive changes in life and in relationships. By exploring the role the past has played in current difficulties and dissolving old, destructive patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, life can be more balanced and joyful. I offer warmth, compassion, support, and insight to my clients, with an approach that is direct, non-judgmental, and tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. Oriented toward building on natural strengths and empowering meaningful changes, our work together can foster an increased ability to more adaptively attend to the ever-changing flow of life. Together, we will work toward identifying destructive behavioral patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and those around us. Learning the art of non-judgmental awareness - mindfulness - we will explore these themes, connecting more intimately with the memories, emotions, thoughts, and sensations fundamentally associated with them. By exploring unmet childhood and current attachment needs, we learn to conquer self-defeating habits and discover a new way of approaching our thoughts, emotions, and personal behavior. Empowering ourselves to get our basic needs met in this way, we move toward creating greater balance, harmony, and joy in our lives.

Have you ever struggled to find the words to describe how you are feeling? Or, wished to express yourself beyond just talking in therapy? When words can't express it, art can! Whether you consider yourself an artist or not (and you don't have to be one to do art), visual expression and the creative process can help. Jung said, "often the hands will solve a mystery the intellect has struggled with in vain." Art offers you the opportunity to explore and work through what is challenging you a little differently than solely talking about it. View 5 Photos I offer a holistic, strengths based, person centered, experiential style of therapy. This includes art. Art becomes a way of knowing, expressing, considering, and exploring within the session. But, this also definitely includes talking. We use art and words to gain perspective and insight on how to help you feel better. To learn more about my practice, please visit my website. Reaching out for support, is an important first step toward change, healing, and growth. Whatever your challenge, you don't have to face it alone. I would like to help you feel better and create the change you wish to see in your life. I look forward to speaking with you!

When people come for therapy, they are feeling uncomfortable. Usually, they are experiencing feelings such as depression, anxiety, or anger. The source of those feelings lies in how they think about themselves or in how they cope with problems in their lives. So, change involves learning new thoughts and behavior. People need to learn self-enhancing ways to think about themselves and what happens to them. They need to change their behavior in order to better meet the challenges of life. Giving up those old, familiar thoughts and behaviors can be frightening because we do not know how to change and what to change to. This is why reading a self-help book is rarely sufficient to help you change. It can give you information, but it cannot help you overcome your fears. Psychotherapy involves helping you decide to change and to act on it. I have seen many forms of psychotherapy come and go, but the basics remain the same. They involve building a therapeutic relationship and helping people find alternatives to their problems. Medications can help this process, but they are not required. If you want or need medications, I have relationships with several psychiatrists in the area.

Throughout my 15 years of counseling a diverse population of clients, I have found that everyone wants the same thing... an increased sense of happiness and peace. This means something different to us all. I am here to help you figure out what that means to you, and how to obtain it. Throughout my experience as a clinician, I have found a multimodal approach to be most beneficial. I highly value the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Based practices to help people achieve their goals. With the recent addition of becoming an EMDR trained therapist, I feel as though my approach is well rounded and balanced. We all go through struggles. Having someone to help navigate through them is sometimes what we need in order to come out on the other end successfully. I am here to help clients make positive change in a warm, caring, empathetic environment.

My approach is highly strengths-based and relational; driven by the belief that a strong, engaging, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential in supporting people to move towards their personal goals. Whether goals are met quickly or over a longer span of time, treatment is focused and goal-oriented. Particular attention is given to naming and enhancing each individual's inherent skills and self-care abilities. I work to build each person's confidence that they have the strengths necessary to reach whatever state they choose for their self. There are many ingredients that, together, can produce a positive experience in therapy. There are two that I consider essential: a strong relationship between therapist and client and a strong commitment to therapy. Your chances for experiencing success in therapy increase when you feel comfortable with and confident in the therapist you are working with. As you consider using psychotherapy as a tool in supporting you to reach your goals, please consider contacting multiple providers. Ask questions about our approach and training. Find someone that fits your style and personality; someone that you feel comfortable with. If that person is me, I look forward to working with you!

Often by the time an individual is entering my office, they have become bogged down and overwhelmed by stress in their life. It is my goal to help quiet the mind (and the busy, stressful world) enough to get in touch with the heart and find true healing. I am a down-to-earth therapist - essentially just another being walking this path of life and trying to find fulfillment in it. I deeply value the time spent with clients as they navigate their lives, figuring out their stressors and their innermost needs that are not being addressed & being with folks as they seek a more centered, authentic and empowered life. I have clinical training in a variety of modalities that can be adjusted and tailored to meet the pace and expectations the client has, including CBT, ACT, EMDR and Mindfulness. My “style” is all about figuring out what is unconsciously stirring up trouble– negative internal dialogue, emotions, behaviors, relationships– and finding healing. It is my hope that clients will build comfort and security in their bodies, ground and tune into the heart and listen, listen, listen. YOU have the answer. I am simply a passenger on the journey. By building your presence within and learning to regulate stress, we can build safety and security in the most important relationship – the one you have with you.

I am interested in our struggles to become ourselves. My decision to become a therapist was based on my own experiences in therapy. Most people come to therapy because they are in pain and life is not working out as they hoped. That means that some of therapy is about the relief of pain and some of it is about a reorganizing of one's life. The experience of therapy also affects the therapist, so I have learned a great deal from my patients. I think "openness" would be a good word to describe my sense of how the process develops. I specialize in issues that relate to men; also grief work, creativity and life transitions such as divorce, midlife struggles and other major changes. I changed my career in order to become a therapist. This makes me attuned to people's life journeys. I'm a writer and the creative process holds fascination for me. I have been involved in the "men's movement" for many years and feel connected to issues men face. I also see therapy as a way of taking "time out" to develop skills and appreciate who we are and assess the blocks that prevent us from becoming more fully ourselves.
