I specialize in using mindfulness-based approaches to treat clients struggling with general & social anxiety; depression; identity development; authentic self-expression & embodiment; coping with life transitions; identifying best choices for life path & finding one's purpose; integrating psychedelic or spiritual experiences; boundary setting; & communicating effectively in relationship. My approach to therapy focuses on empowering clients by to direct their life's course with confidence & know-how, providing skills for successful emotional regulation & creating therapeutic opportunities for developing self-knowledge & inner-wisdom. My work has led me to believe in the human capacity for emotional health & resilience under even the toughest of circumstances. In treatment, I nourish this capacity by using evidence-based interventions, an appreciation for the spontaneous & the playful, and drawing on what I know has worked well in the past with other clients facing similar challenges. I am continually humbled by how the therapeutic journey is defined by the ways in which it is unique to each traveler, not by similarities. I always keep this in mind when working with clients. It allows me to be more connected, present, & real, while also establishing safe ground for their meaningful self-discovery, healing, & creative collaboration.

I believe that in therapy, the focus should first be on learning to gain acceptance of ourselves. I feel that our beliefs about ourselves are paramount because they shape the beliefs that we have about other people and in turn, the rest of our environment. After we identify the beliefs about ourselves that need to be adjusted, we can work on how to improve those beliefs, which will improve our interactions with others and the way that we see the world. I look forward to helping others with that process. View 5 Photos Another focal point of therapy is to examine the way that we develop our identities based on our perceptions of where we come from and what we have been through in life. Everyone has the opportunity to improve their sense of self by improving how they develop their respective identity. I am a real down to Earth person and my motto is that you should always entertain the possibility that you might be wrong - which I also practice daily. Although it isn't something that comes naturally to most, its something that, once you practice, can change your relationships and your life for the better.

Welcome to my psychotherapy practice. With over 20 years of experience, I offer children, families, and adults a safe and accepting environment to explore and gain a better understanding of the issues most affecting their lives. Rather than solely focusing on behaviors or symptoms, I work with individuals and families on gaining insight and understanding into the various underlying causes of their thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is only then that meaningful and long-lasting change is possible. For adults, feelings of worry, sadness, anger, guilt, stress, and self-doubt are often caused by a combination of present life circumstances and troubling past experiences. Together, we will work on helping you make inner changes and choices that will ultimately lead to a more meaningful, satisfying, and enjoyable life. Children often have difficulty putting their feelings into words. Instead, they "act out" these feelings within their relationships with parents, siblings, and others. The goal of child therapy is to promote healthy and progressive emotional development. This is achieved through play and talk therapy along with parent guidance sessions.

I started in the field working as a substance abuse counselor intern conducting group therapy and individual therapy in an IOP/PHP setting. I had the experience working with court mandated clients. I have also worked in an inpatient substance abuse setting where I also conducted groups, facilitated lectures on recovery topics and provided individual therapy and case management. Following this position, I found myself in outpatient mental where I gained the most clinical experience working with a diverse population and treating a variety of issues. I have worked with children as young as 10, adolescents and adults up to age 65. My approach when treating all clients is tailored. I tend to be primarily cognitive based in my approach but I will often bring in other approaches from person centered, solutions focused, or REBT. I am direct and authentic within the therapeutic relationship which I believe fosters change within clients. My areas of focus are substance abuse disorders, dual diagnosis, grief and loss, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, life transitions, employment stress, trauma, and self-esteem issues.

Do you feel stuck? That something is missing but you're not sure what? How about that you know what's missing and it's being true to who you are? Throughout the years of experience that I have working with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults I have learned that at the basis of all of our life experiences, we all wish to be heard, accepted, and to feel connected to ourselves, others, and our emotions. By being in a safe therapeutic relationship that accepts you as you are, you are able to unburden the heaviness that you've been carrying and with this new feeling of relief, there is hope for something new and healing. I base my therapy work on helping the client become "unstuck". We'll learn how to cope with the "now" using coping skills but we will also work to uncover where these difficulties may be coming from using psychodynamic, CBT, and EFT to build insight and awareness of how our past connects with our "now" and what cycles we can break to have permanent healing. So if you're ready to make that first move to uncovering and discovering your true self, come on in and take a seat in my office wherever you may feel comfortable. And let the real work begin.

I once had a client compare meeting a new therapist to being on a blind date. No one therapist approaches challenges the same way and we are all unique just like you. While it may feel like being on a blind date, reading a therapist’s bio is a way to take some of the guesswork out of the equation. I received my M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Frostburg State University in 2005 and became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2013. Over the years I have had the privilege of working with a diverse population of individuals including LGBTQ+ and adults with Mild Intellectual Disability. While my counseling background is primarily based in CBT, I also draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Motivational Enhancement Therapy. One of the aspects I love regarding counseling is there can be more than one way to achieve a desired outcome, meaning everyone’s therapeutic journey is uniquely different. We can talk, draw, create sensory bottles, do simple yoga poses - the only thing we are limited by is our imagination.
