I believe it is my calling to help my clients get to a better place and live happier, more fulfilled lives. I hope to help you see your worth, understand your past and how you got to the present, and explore the possibilities for your future! I use a psychoanalytic approach which simply means that I will listen to your story from childhood up through adulthood to get an understanding of what has happened over your life that may be manifesting today and causing challenges for you. Then we do the work to heal the parts that maybe aren't so whole right now. The individuals and families I have worked with over my career have reintroduced me to myself as I share some of the same experiences they have. I particularly love working with young adult women, black men and survivors of intimate partner violence. I also specialize in helping those with family conflict and relationship challenges. I can help you process through what has happened to you or what you are currently feeling--at your pace. As a therapist that has a therapist, I understand that finding a good fit is a process. If you are ready to take the first step, please reach out to me and let's see if we may work well together.

Please note, I am only taking patients affected by the current war in Israel. I am doing this as a community service for no-fee. As a PhD Clinical Psychologist for over 25 years, I have worked with a wide range of patients including executives, veterans, students and parents. While everyone is unique, my approach to treatment generally focuses on helping the patient understand the connections between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors so that they ultimately can gain better control over all of them and find the personal meaning in their life. I have several areas of specialization. These include, attention disorders, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Post-covid Syndrome, chronic pain, psychological issues related to medical illnesses and disability, unexplained illness, depression and anxiety. My published research includes work in many of these areas. My training has included both intensive study of neuropsychology/cognitive rehabilitation and psychoanalytic post- doctoral coursework. For 22 years, I was on the full-time faculty of the APA-accredited PhD training program at Fairleigh Dickenson University where I taught courses in psychotherapy & psychopathology & supervised graduate students.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by feelings of distress, you're not alone. Many individuals reach out to me, seeking support for general feelings of unhappiness, sadness, anxiety or anger. As an experienced psychotherapist, I specialize in guiding people through these emotions with care and understanding, while also helping them navigate other challenging conflicts in their life. I do this through a psychoanalytic approach, a therapy that fosters long-term emotional growth by exploring and understanding unconscious thoughts and feelings that may cause issues like anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and relationship difficulties. In terms of my experience, I've had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life circumstances, which has provided me with invaluable experience and empathy. For me, ethics and understanding serve as the utmost guiding tools in therapy. Thus, I consider ongoing training, professional development, and consultation to be vital. I understand how important it is to consider therapy, and I appreciate your step towards it. To determine if this type of therapy is right for you, I encourage you to schedule a free consultation. It's an opportunity for us to get to know each other and explore how I can assist you.

I believe that mental health is similar to one's physical health. Just as we can hurt and thrive physically, so can we hurt and thrive psychologically and emotionally. There are times when we can all use someone to talk to, someone to help us navigate life, or someone to walk with us as we move through periods of growth and newness. I will work hard to meet you where you are, offering unconditional regard and emotional support. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I have been practicing in the mental and behavioral health field since 2013. I have a range of experience, including PTSD, behavioral disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, anxiety, mood disorders, and relationship issues. I believe counseling should be more than just managing symptoms and changing behavior. we each have a story that may be effecting how we are living life today. Additionally, many times in life we experience loss and this goes unprocessed, unheard, and many people become silent sufferers, which can then lead to more significant mental health struggles. By helping individuals and couples mourn their loss, I help individuals not get stuck in their grief and find renewal, balance, hope and healing. I am a licensed professional counselor with 20 years experience working in the mental health field. Having worked in a wide range of settings from psychiatric hospitals, large health care systems and in private practice, I have refined my skills and have chosen to specialize in Grief and Loss, Trauma Healing, EMDR, and Couples therapy. I believe that everyone struggles with something, though not all struggles look the same. I am honored to use my natural skill sets to help individuals find healing in their life and their relationships through looking at the present, past, and future through objective compassionate eyes.

Are you struggling to show up in the present? Do you ever feel 'haunted' by past experiences that foreclose your way toward the future you want? I have met such roadblocks myself and believe that building a healthy interpersonal relationship in therapy paves the road to unlocking your goals & desires. I have specialties working with queer women & femmes in addressing anxiety, t/Trauma processing & recovery, sexual assault, and identity exploration. Gestalt therapy is oriented around building awareness: of ourselves, of our thoughts & behaviors, of our choices, and of our physical systems that are constantly sending us invaluable data about our experiences. I believe that for each of us to increase this awareness brings us more fully into the present, and only in the present do we have agency to change. Therapy is a dialogue. CURRENTLY NOT Accepting Clients. I love my work as a couples' counselor. As a Gottman Seven Principles Program Educator, I have 20+ years experience helping couples & individuals improve communication, rekindle intimacy and improve awareness of patterns that may result in defensiveness, feeling "not heard" by your partner. In individual therapy, I create a warm environment so clients feel comfortable to share their issues. Together we develop goals & strategies for cultivating positive changes. In couples work, we address problematic communication to change those patterns from ineffective to effective habits & behaviors. I help you learn to be more aware of those patterns, so each partner can put into place skills and techniques for enhancing intimacy. Therefore, you can learn to enjoy each other for who you are, appreciating again the strengths and positive qualities that you first felt in each other. I'm a Gottman Seven Priniciples Program Educator, teaching skills from "The Seven Principles For Making Marriage Work," by John Gottman, Ph.D. of the Gottman Institute. I would enjoy speaking with you about any questions about counseling or feel free to visit my website, www.kathleenpolcer.com.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Clinical Psychology and graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. My therapy approach is taken from an attachment theory and perspective. I believe humans are wired to feel connected and that we all greatly benefit from healthy relationships. Without this connectedness, we may experience loneliness or isolation. I provide a safe, accepting space for individuals, couples, and families using a positive Existential Therapy Model to support self-awareness, meaningful relationships, and values of life. View 5 Photos Together with my clients, I help identify personal strengths, increase self-worth, explore family behavioral patterns and roadblocks to developing healthy relationships. Most important in my therapy practice is to help clients celebrate the freedom of empowerment, healing, and connectedness - all of which I believe leads to personal growth. I have worked with a variety of populations and culturally diverse ethnic groups managing attachment injuries, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, high functioning Autism, codependency, grief, marital/family conflict, infidelity, parenting issues, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, women/men’s issues, and day-to-day stressors.

Do you feel stuck, empty, or unfulfilled? I work with individual clients who experience ongoing depression and anxiety, grief and loss, guilt and shame, difficulty getting close to others, difficulty with assertiveness, harsh self-criticism, relational conflict, and trauma. I also work with couples during any stage of their relationship. I am especially passionate about working with adults and young professionals (age 18-40ish) on such defining issues as strengthening one’s sense of self, navigating intimate and committed relationships, fostering adult friendships, developing one’s career, and starting a family. Using an insight-oriented and relational (psychodynamic) approach, I help clients uncover the roots of their current behaviors, patterns, and challenges. I believe that the better you know yourself, the better you will function — the more freedom you will have to live an intentional life and make decisions based on your true needs and desires. I know how difficult it can be to reach out for support, and I'm here to offer a listening ear. Please reach out if you’d like to set up a free phone consultation where you can ask questions, describe your challenges to me, and assess whether I can offer the support you are looking for.

I believe in transparency and honesty. I have experienced my own difficulties and challenges in life after 22 years in the U.S. Army and I am in recovery from PTSD and substance abuse. Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to be addicted to substances. It just happens. We are not weak, defective, useless, worthless, morally corrupt, or any other disparaging comments often said about individuals with a Substance Use Disorder. We are loving individuals that are just hurting inside. We want what everyone else wants....to just be accepted and needed for who we are. I use an eclectic approach to therapy; including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement, Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Just as each one of us are unique with our own individualistic personalities, I too believe therapy should be tailored to the individual. There is no one model that fits everyone. I have been there. After my return from my third combat deployment, I began abusing prescription medication and alcohol. Fortunately, I was blessed with the opportunity to get help. This journey has led me to dedicating my life to helping others experiencing similar difficulties. I don't have all of the answers, but I do know the way out.

Therapy can help you understand how past experiences impact your daily life and relationships. By recognizing these patterns, we can begin cultivating lasting change in our interactions and relationships. Most of my clients want to improve their relationships, their sex life, or explore their identities or transitions. I specialize in sex and relationship therapy, enhancing intimacy and desire, improving differences in desire, and working through pain or dysfunction, particularly within the queer community. I also offer psychological evaluations to clarify diagnoses and collaborate on treatment recommendations. My therapeutic style is inquisitive, direct, humorous, and warm. My work is rooted in psychological science and within an anti-racist LGBTQ+-affirming, sex-positive framework. Beginning or continuing therapy is not easy, especially when life already feels difficult. When your world is overwhelming or chaotic, numb or lifeless, I can help in addressing debilitating symptoms and finding ways to cope. At the same time, we can work together to identify unacknowledged emotions, fears, desires, and entrenched patterns so that you can form new ways of living with meaning and vitality. I aim to create a trusting, non-judgmental environment in which one feels safe enough to explore thoughts and feelings, to say whatever comes to mind. My experience includes working with people suffering from relationship conflicts, sexuality and identity, trauma, social isolation, job struggles, loneliness, immigration, eating issues, and substance use. We can look to the past to understand the present with the goal of creating reflective, long-lasting change in your lived experience.
