I work with clients whose psychological issues cross the boundaries between brain, body, mind, and spirit. Special interests are the broad spectrum of ADHD and related brain differences, and the stress caused by living with these in a misunderstanding society. My approach integrates mindfulness practices, attention and working memory training, with depth psychology (dreamwork, a symbolic and imaginative approach to life, seeking meaning beneath constriction). Because neuropsychological issues raise questions of meaning, self-worth, and place in the world, these are central to my work. Unfortunately, our culture often sees ADHD as laziness or irresponsibility rather than what it is: a brain difference with positive as well as negative potentials. I help clients understand and challenge this distortion. The uniqueness of my approach is that I integrate cognitive-behavioral practices like breathing, executive function training, and neurofeedback with depth psychological therapy and mindfulness. The mind and body exist in a profound relationship of mutual influence; therefore, it is most effective to work with both at once.

Sometimes you can see the demons clearly; they might be anxiety, persistent and unmanageable anger, depression or feelings of worthlessness. But sometimes you don't see them because they've become such a part of your life; then those demons may take the form of frequent struggles with a boss at work, a pervasive sense of emptiness, or a series of failed relationships. My work is about helping individuals and couples with their demons.

I serve Alaska and Montana clients virtually. People come to therapy seeking growth and healing. Many seek the benefits of more insight into themselves and their responses to their day to day lives. People seek relief from things like anxiety and depression, wanting to find another way to feel about themselves and their lives. I have a strong interest in working to support healing from trauma. For some trauma is the result of an isolated incident, for others trauma contributes to long-held patterns of thought and behavior that are no longer working well. I believe we are all able to grow, to experience relief, and to heal. View 5 Photos I use tools including EMDR, somatic, clinical hypnosis and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as other trauma-informed approaches. I work with trauma, attachment, depression, anxiety, and stress. My goal is to help clients notice and appreciate their strength, while gaining new insight and opportunities for moving forward. Reaching out can be hard. I invite you to visit my website and blog at www.julieshewmanlpc.com to learn more about me and my approach to therapy. Please give me a call if you would like to connect.

My practice of psychotherapy draws on Jungian, existential, and relational psychologies as well as the world's great spiritual paths, with emphasis on the Buddhist and Daoist traditions. This is more than a cognitive or insight-oriented process: it is an energetic, embodied practice involving dreams, intuition, meditation, and imaginal process, with the the understanding that clarifying our unique purpose in this life is an essential element of healing psyche and body. I'm also a licensed acupuncturist and for those who are interested I incorporate acupuncture and other aspects of Chinese medicine in psychotherapy. View 4 Photos As both a clinical psychologist and a licensed acupuncturist, I work with people with emotional, physical, spiritual, and mind-body concerns of all kinds, including anxiety, depression, personal and intergenerational trauma, chronic/recurrent pain, sleep / insomnia, fatigue and energy, and many others. I also appreciate working with people with concerns related to identity, direction, and life path, who are feeling stuck, unwell, or generally unfulfilled, or who would like to deepen their spirituality, sense of embodiment, and connection to their own energy and sense of purpose.

Anxious during these uncertain times, try some simple tips to take back your life. Breathe. Sit upright, feet flat on the floor, inhale to a count of 4, exhale to a count of 4, repeat for a couple minutes. Write down all that worries you. Pick the top 3. Write out possible solutions, even bad ones. Identify the most practical and how you would do it. Get negative thoughts out of your head. Manage your anger. Breathe. Identify what’s frustrating. What you can do about it? Some things just have to run their own course. Move around. Do something different. Go into another room, do something else. Avoid doom and gloom. Limit your exposure to worrisome news. Find some humor. Avoid anxious eating or using substances. Move your body. If you're able, go for a walk Find 3 things you are grateful for. Reach out to someone you haven't heard from. Be aware of others. Try being the best self you want to be. Now is the time to take care of yourself. Use this time for yourself. Get a good night’s rest. Focus on what you have. Give what you can. Be grateful. If you want more ways to help yourself, call Dr. Lazur or another therapist. You are not alone.
