Current openings T,W,F. I am a passionate therapist and healer who believes in being the vehicle for change for the families, individuals and groups I work with. I believe in a holistic approach to mental health. Family involvement is crucial in implementing long term change. I enjoy working with adolescents and adults who struggle with eating disorders, substance abuse, relational problems, mood disorders and anxiety disorders. Outside of therapy, I am a mom, yoga teacher, previously a school counselor and world traveler. I have been working in the field for 10+ years. I have been specializing in eating disorders and OCD for the past 4 years. Most recently I opened up two Intensive Outpatient Programs for two major players in the ED and Addiction world before opening up my own holistic private practice. In my private practice I currently see adults, adolescents, families, and couples struggling with a variety of issues. I incorporate different therapeutic techniques in order to best suit the client and their recovery and/or healing process. I also at times provide meal support, body acceptance groups and self esteem groups in my private practice.

A friend and colleague once wrote "I have known Debra since she took a position in 1994 as a Clinical Psychologist in our regional hospital. Physicians, nurses, and I were soon taken by her warmth, compassion, and ability to help others, even those with the most difficult of problems. She demonstrated an affinity for children, adolescents, and families, having an instinctual playful approach with children, easy connection with adolescents, and sensitivity toward families." Since that time, I - Debra - have attempted to join others along their path and walk with them toward a better future. View 8 Photos My path has included working on psychiatric and medical units in hospitals in upstate NY and at Massachusetts Mental Health Center/Harvard Medical School; Community and School-Based Health Centers affiliated with Rochester General Hospital; and most recently in CT as the Clinical Program Manager of St. Vincent's Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program. Now, I'd like to start on a new venture with you to address what you are facing in a supportive, life-changing manner. I work with Adolescents, Adults, Couples and Families. Together we can promote growth and healing within yourself and your relationships, and shed light on a transformational path.

Unfortunately I am unable to welcome new clients at this time… A doctor colleague of mine refers people to me saying, "if you're ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work, I recommend Gina." My style is a blend of warm, safe, open-hearted acceptance, and curious, challenging, emotional work: all within the context of a real relationship. I have over thirty years of experience and can help you improve your relationship with yourself and others, improve both your work and family life, change behaviors that aren't working for you, and feel more at peace. In graduate school, I developed an interest in what was then a new area of psychotherapy: the treatment of trauma. As this field developed, I've had extensive training, supervision and clinical experience in helping people become less burdened by their past to live more fully in the present.

I work with adults (18+) to help reduce emotional distress, improve and deepen relationships, and explore what is causing feelings of anxiety, depression, or unhappiness. Overwhelming negative emotions are often caused by family conflict, disappointments at work, questions about identity, a breakup or loss, or other significant life events. I specialize in helping people with the transition from school to the workplace, infertility, new parenthood, career/financial pressures, comparison to others, uncertainty about occupation or partner, fears of failure, relationship instability, self-criticism, difficulties with family. View 6 Photos When you are no longer able to use your internal resources or the feedback from friends and family to cope with or shift your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, therapy provides an alternative way to actualize change. I provide a protected space to process difficult emotions, learn coping skills, and access strengths and empowerment. I am currently providing telehealth and am licensed in Connecticut and New York. It's essential to feel understood by and compatible with your therapist. I offer a free phone consultation to determine if I am well-suited to your needs. I then recommend 2-3 sessions to figure out if working with me feels like the right fit. I look forward to connecting!

My clients are individuals of all ages on the autistic spectrum, who suspect they might be on th spectrum or have autistic traits: social difficulties, sensory issues, challenges with flexibility, handling relationships and jobs and anxiety. Many have no diagnosis, or have been given many different diagnoses. My goal is to understand, respect and help my client as an individual. I offer diagnosis for adults and treatment for all ages - women in particular can have a problem finding a clinician who "gets" them. I strongly recommend using meditation as an adjunct to therapy, since it’s proven to improve stress resilience.. My approach includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), stress management, social skills coaching, mindfulness/meditation and practical support . Teens and adults get help to achieve their personal goals; parents find insight and direction so they can understand and work with their children more successfully. Call, and we can discuss the best way to meet your goals. I offer a free consultation. “Dr. Eckerd's insights changed the way we parent, and have eliminated a lot of frustration at home. Her work with our school has had considerable impact. The result is a less anxious, more confident kid."

In those moments when you feel overwhelmed, you deserve an advocate: someone to hold space for your completely unique situation. If you are struggling with feelings of emptiness, dissatisfaction, frustration, or low self-worth, it might be the right time to consider starting therapy. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist providing counseling support to mothers and parents navigating the realms of parenthood. I’m well versed in perinatal mood disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma. I’ve worked with mothers suffering from PPD/PPA, first-time parents, and parents of small children. My goal is to help parents regain joy in parenthood and feel like ‘themselves’ again. If you’re struggling with the invisible load of motherhood, find yourself snapping at your children more than you’d like, or are a first-time mother/parent feeling overwhelmed with life and a new baby, I can help you. As a mother myself, I can say I’ve been on the other side of the motherhood trenches (and still am from time to time) and there’s nothing more isolating than navigating parenthood with limited support. Parenting is not easy, and together we can identify ways to overcome specific challenges and stressors. With my client-centered and nurturing approach, I'll provide you with a safe place, free from shame and judgment, to share freely how you feel. Together we can get you to be the mother and parent you want to be.
