In my practice, I work successfully with people suffering from depression and anxiety, grappling with life changes and decisions, and struggling in important relationships. My orientation strives to deepen insight and self-knowledge, identify entrenched and sometimes destructive patterns in life, draw on your inner strengths, and move towards greater fulfillment in yourself and your relationships. See my website for much more information about my background, experience, and orientation to therapy. There I also offer suggestions for how to go about finding a good therapist who is both skilled and a fit for you. I have extensive experience working with people who have experienced trauma in their lives and, when indicated, I facilitate adjunct forms of treatment to work with the ongoing effects of trauma. When medication might be a useful in conjunction with psychotherapy I work closely with a psychiatric colleague as a therapeutic team. My own research, publications, and college-level teaching informs my sub-specialty in the psychology of religion and culture. When desired I can engage and explore cultural, religious, or spiritual concerns of any orientation within therapy.

I specialize in betrayal trauma, affair recovery for couples, as well as sex and porn addiction for male/female and Mother Hunger. Have you hit the “work required” part of your relationship? I am trained to address intimacy issues and support you to restore healing and peace. Our space will be a place where we work to understand the "why" around what is happening in your life and where we identify how to change what isn't working for you. Once we understand these origins, we can help you to highlight your strengths while overcoming the hurdles and challenges that are in the way of your life goals, happiness, and daily peace. My professional experience varies from working in healthcare to education and therapy for youth & their families. I now work with adults & couples who deal with sex addiction, porn exposure/addiction, betrayal trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, life transitions and stress. For couples, I work to identify negative cycles & facilitate how to remove them. In today’s busy and disconnected world, it can be hard to distinguish between outside distractions and our inner monkey minds. The thoughts chattering noisily in our heads can lead to unhealthy habits, strain our relationships, and create toxic thought patterns. I work with clients to ‘quiet the monkeys’ with techniques and strategies to heal and thrive.

I provide neurodiversity-affirming Autism and ADHD evaluations for adults in the state of Maryland as well as individual therapy. Some folks may come to me through self-identification and are simply looking to affirm what they already know about themselves, while others may be exploring neurodivergence for the first time. I am ready to meet you wherever you are in your self-discovery journey. My process is based on the client’s needs, but a typical evaluation includes gathering of social and developmental history, completion of self-report questionnaires, and the use of several diagnostic tools. View 4 Photos If you are interested in working with a therapist after your evaluation, I provide neurodiversity-affirming individual therapy and executive functioning coaching. I am a proud ADHDer, and strive to create a supportive and strengths-based setting for all of my clients. While a person can feel better after a good talk with a friend or relative, for moderate or severe distress, this relief is only temporary. At those times, it is beneficial to talk with a trained counselor who listens and interacts in a way to get to the very root for your emotional concerns. I offer my clients an opportunity to face their difficulties confidently and constructively; freeing them to enjoy all the good things life has to offer. I understand the importance of building a trusted relationship and work with each client to develop an individual plan that meets their goals whether it be learning to manage their grief, navigating a life transition, facing a diagnosis, improving their relationships or building self esteem.

There are times when we outgrow our current coping skills and need to refocus our energy and will. Balancing our ways we survive is key by using different strategies and techniques that are carved out for each one of us. Being an art therapist and a clinical social worker, I believe that in my work with children, adolescents, and adults a way exists in finding the best self that is somewhere within themselves. Using cognitive behavioral therapy with a client-centered focus, I can join with and provide an outlet for clients to share experiences and work together to foster an improved sense of self and well-being. I have been working with clients with various needs ranging from ADHD, to anxiety, depression, mood, personality and traumatic experiences, to help them as I approach with an open mind and kind, non-judgmental regard for all. Art materials can be incorporated into the sessions as needed and experimentation with different media is known to relax and engage. A thorough assessment will be administered at the first visit to gather demographic information and the presenting needs to determine the best course of treatment. Building a relationship is the strongest and most effective way to help! Offering daytime and some evening hours, I am flexible to schedule. I am providing virtual sessions at this time only.

I am passionate about creating an open environment for people to explore, understand, and communicate about their thoughts, feelings, wants and needs. I believe that as one is able to learn their authentic self, they become able to embrace true identity, transform boundaries, and connect to themselves and others more fully. I enjoy helping others explore how thought, lived experiences (familial, cultural, societal influences), and behavior patterns impact daily life, self concept, connection, and achievement. I find joy in supporting others to break patterns that do no serve their life goals. As humans, we may receive messaging that encourages self denial (of feelings, passions, needs, etc). I enjoying helping others to identify their choice and stand in their power. Becoming more able to move through adversity with self compassion and a peaceful mind. As humans, we often learn to conform to the status quo; seeking acceptance. I want to help people embrace their unique qualities as a means of self care and self empowerment. Does anxiety prevent you from achieving what you want personally, professionally, in athletics, or in other performance domains? I frequently help folks to become their more authentic selves, and to feel and perform their best. I don't pretend to have all the right answers, but I'm very good at asking the right questions, helping you to tap into your own inner wisdom. Through connection, insight, emotional working through, and development of skills, we will partner to tackle your problems or goals together. A primary goal is to equip you to face whatever is hard internally, interpersonally, or otherwise. View 9 Photos I pull from a unique set of experiences, training, and credentials - counseling & sport psychology, mindfulness, & psychophysiology. Anxiety tolerance centers on taking catastrophe out of anxiety, becoming mindful of it, perhaps even curious with it. Anxiety reduction is learning to turn it down a notch because "I can," shifting from a stance of "I have to." Therapy is not easy, but I strive to remove the stigma, and to help you embrace the challenge. I enjoy understanding people at a deeper level, in a manner that facilitates achievement of the goals they lay out for themselves, whether that entails feeling more connected with others, or working to feel and achieve your best more consistently.

Exhausted, sad, angry or overwhelmed? When in the throes of negative feelings, it’s often easy to forget that they serve as signposts for boundary violations or unmet needs. Just as hunger, cold and other uncomfortable sensations shift to a sense of comfort or satisfaction when the need is met, emotional distress likewise transitions to a sense of fullness, wholeness or connectedness whenever the needs which underlie it are met. My approach is holistic, viewing problems as interwoven parts of the whole person – mind, body, environment, and the interpersonal. I see counseling as a collaborative process to empower my clients through developing awareness and supporting their journey to find healing and effective ways of getting these needs met. In addition to individual psychotherapy, small group process, and couples/family counseling, I also offer professional workshops and staff training. If you’re facing challenging life circumstances or a personal history which you can’t seem to escape, I would welcome the opportunity to walk a part of the journey with you.

Therapy is truly all about the relationship between therapist and client. It’s a vulnerable and courageous act to embark on a mental health journey, so comfort and sense of connection is a must. I am someone – in life, in work, in relationship – who has a foundation of empathy, a drive to help others, and a strong appreciation for humor. These core values come directly from my Midwestern upbringing, during which I was taught by example to treat all others with kindness and patience. I have a special soft spot for anyone who struggles with anxiety, especially children and adolescents. View 6 Photos A large amount of what I do utilizes expressive arts therapy, which stems from my first career in arts and education. Therapy might be any number of creative activities to reach identified goals, such as establishing boundaries, developing coping skills, or communicating emotions. Play therapy, storytelling, movement, and sand therapy are among my favorites. Taking the step to begin a wellness journey can be daunting. I invite you to reach out, and together we can see how I might help.
