My background as a family therapist means that I am trained to look at problems within a relational framework, whether that be between people, social systems, or the varied components of self within a single individual. The longer I practice, the more I believe that suffering and symptoms arise when we are disconnected from these relationships; disconnected from our bodies, from our emotions, from our needs, from our communities, and from others… Using a mix of psychoeducation, emotional processing, and somatic work, my intention is to help clients reconnect with themselves and others in ways that feel gentle, supportive, and growth-inducing. I believe that the client is always the expert in his/her own life and approach my sessions with the goal of being a co-collaborator in this process of healing. I view the relationship between client and therapist as one of the most important elements of the therapy process and believe that when it is based on trust, compassion, and humor it can be incredibly healing. As such, I try to create an environment in which my clients feel unconditionally accepted while still being therapeutically challenged when needed.

Are you tired of feeling stuck? It's easy to put off getting help; life keeps moving whether you're feeling good or not. But when you're in a bad place-- with behavior or emotional patterns (anxiety, depression, unhealthy habits, stress) or with relationships (loneliness, conflict, toxic interactions)-- then it costs you time, keeping you from engaging with life the way you want to. We'll work together to help you understand what's gotten you to where you are and, most important, how to create and enact a plan to change the problematic patterns and enhance the positive aspects of your life. Have you been down about work or school, or your relationships, or the stresses of parenthood? I'm ready to listen and help. My work uses a variety of cognitive-behavioral, ACT, and mindfulness techniques full of warmth, gentle but firm guidance, sound and current science, and (yes-- It's allowed!) even humor. Some clients find me through my other work-- my longtime Washington Post mental health columns and my commentary on CNN, my bestselling "Detox Your Thoughts" book, or my mental health trainings. I've also taught for fifteen years at Georgetown University. Across my work, my goal is always the same-- using sound science to help create more fulfilling lives.

As a therapist, I work with children, adults, couples, and families as they navigate various life transitions. This can include reorganization within the family system, through either a new marriage, a separation or divorce, birth of a new family member, the exploration of alternative family building options, or various other life events. I have advanced training in working with individuals and couples who are at the transition to parenthood. This includes working with those who are trying to balance the stress that can come with parenthood and those whose journey to parenthood was met with challenges, such as infertility, reproductive loss, trauma, or perinatal mood or anxiety disorders. I offer daytime and evenings appointments in person and via telehealth. Individuals seek treatment because they are in pain. Facing one's own weaknesses is difficult and opening up even more so-particularly for people whose cultural background and/or family upbringing discourges transparency /self-disclosure. My priority is to create a safe environment where my clients may confront, accept and change aspects of their lives they consider shameful and/or self-destructive. I have been invited as a guest speaker by a number of organizations and regularly offer seminars and work shops on such themes as self-esteem,communication skills, stress management and the challenges of being married/single and dating I have almost four decades of experience and have received extensive training from leading experts including Dr. Albert Ellis/founder of RET and Dr. Jhon Gottman /couple therapy guru. Both voted as the top 10 most influential therapists of the past quarter century. I am a certified RET therapist and a certified Gottman Method educator. Community outreach/educating the public is important to me. In early 90’s I launched a weekly television program to address issues that Iranian-Americans struggle with- among them, acculturation, depression, anxiety, career choices, parenting, marital discord and the difficulties of being single/dating .
