A good therapist-client fit is essential to getting the help you need. I have a great deal of life experience and cultural awareness from growing up in a risky area of Los Angeles, serving in the U.S. Army (9 yrs), experiencing combat and loss, living through natural disasters, working with and supporting military veterans, working as a therapist with juveniles for the State of Utah, and overcoming many of life's personal obstacles. I have a passion for working with people. I believe connecting with you is essential to treatment success. As your therapist, I promise to be there for you every step of the way. View 21 Photos Mental illness itself occurs from the interaction of multiple genes in the body and other environmental factors such as stress, abuse, neglect, or an event, which can influence, or trigger an illness in a person. Therapy can help treat mental illness and help one overcome emotional and behavioral problems that tend to disrupt normal functioning. Ultimately, anyone can develop a mental illness. My goal is to help you and/or your loved one grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life. Let me help you build resiliency and find joy in your life.

Maya Angelou says, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better." I firmly believe that we all do the best we can with the knowledge we have at any moment in our lives. If there has been a time in your life when you felt "I should have done better," it's OK and very normal to feel that. It's when we recognize the need to do better, that we can make changes in our lives. Taking the step to get help will be the action that makes all the difference in your life. People often presume all therapists are good listeners, yet many do more talking. I am truly a "listener." My approach to working with clients is to start with their strengths, meaning everyone has the potential inside to heal and choose the life they want to live. We will look at the connection between the mind and body and how trauma affects our ability to make decisions. After understanding your trauma impact, we will remap your mind and body patterns. Therapists are often asked, “can you just tell me what to do?” My approach is to work with you by asking questions focused on your unique situation. Questions often yield an “aha” moment. Your mind provides the answers you were seeking all along. I have the pleasure of the “universe” providing answers allowing us to work on creating the right plan for you.

I have worked in the social work field for more than 30 years. I have worked with adults and children in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, hospital emergency department crisis, and 21 years in the juvenal justice system. I believe in Self-Determination Theory, an individual’s ability to make choices and manage their own life, and Person-Centered Therapy (a form of talk therapy) where the client (you) is believed to be the expert of your life and therefore you lead the direction of your therapy. I use many different modalities of evidence-based treatment including CBT, motivational interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I work with teens and adults. I am over 60, so I have a unique perspective when working with older adults, especially older males. My 21 years in the juvenile justice system working with "at risk" and "troubled teens" gives me a better understanding of their needs and how to work with them and their issues. I am a NOJOS level 1-3 treatment provider Kudos to you for being proactive in your life and mental health. “Picking” a therapist can be a daunting (anxiety producing) task. So choose a therapist that works for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions before, during, and after receiving services. This is a big decision, so above all else, if you don’t connect find someone else until you do!
