For the past 15 years, I have been committed to working with preschool and school-aged children and their families who are struggling with anxiety and other emotional and behavioral regulation difficulties. I also support children and families through the complicated emotions of divorce, adoption, and other losses as well as the stress and threats to self-esteem that can accompany learning challenges, ADHD and social difficulties. I partner comprehensively with children, parents, schools, and other involved professionals with the aim of building the strongest possible foundation from which children can grow and thrive. I believe that play is a foundational method for engaging young children using their most natural language. Through play, children share the thoughts, feelings, and experiences for which they do not yet have words as well as learn and practice new skills for success in life. I also work closely with caregivers to learn about their parenting joys and challenges and hopes and fears for their children. We work together to integrate new insights into a parenting plan equipped with strategies to support families in growing their capacities for collaborative problem solving and emotional regulation.

I work with a diverse group of clients, including children, teens, adults, couples, and families. I am able to help individuals of all ages with a wide range of issues, including depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, and trauma. With children, I also help with ADHD, emotional and behavioral problems, and selective mutism, and I help parents with parenting skills. Bilingual in English and Spanish, I enjoy working with individuals from diverse groups, including the LGBTQ community and individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds. I help adults and children alike to achieve their goals and reach their full potential. While my specialty is in working with children, and I work with children as young as age 2, having such a foundation actually helps with my adult work as well, as I can fully understand and deal with underlying dynamics stemming from childhood that affect adult behavior and emotions. My style includes working from psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), and family systems orientations, combining them as appropriate in an integrative approach that best meets the needs of each individual/family with whom I work. In addition, in working with children, I conduct play therapy and use behavioral interventions as needed.

I work from a wellness model and believe anyone can benefit from counseling. I work to provide a safe environment where my clients feel supported and heard. Counseling has not, and still isn't always accepted in many communities, so making the decision to come to counseling with the fear of "el que diran" (what will they say) can be difficult. I will do my best to guide you in your journey to understand how therapy can help you. I also have over 9 years of experience working with individuals who have been affected by cancer, and know it can be difficult to find someone to talk to who is knowledgeable on the topic. I am a certified navigator-breast advocate. My specialties are working with clients on end of life issues, depression, adjustment due to loss, grief, anxiety, working with burnout and compassion fatigue, healthcare professionals, 1st generation college students, and Spanish speaking populations. I understand that finding the right therapist can be a challenging process, but I hope that you will reach out and schedule a phone consultation. I look forward to working with you.

Our early family of origin experiences lay the foundation for internal and relational patterns that continue to play out in later life. Many of our patterns include our best and most creative efforts to adapt to the tough stuff of life such as trauma, misattunement, and loss. Though these patterns are not set in stone, they are often automatic and hard to recognize, change, or understand. Together we can explore the ways in which our adaptations may have served you well in earlier times but are no longer proving to be helpful, effective, or authentic. I work with clients to create connection, healing, safety, and satisfaction. In my work with teens and families, we identify effective ways to process and cope with distress, supporting your teen to feel more confident and connected and less burdened by anxiety or low self-worth. I work with caregivers to effectively meet their child's needs, feel confident in their role, and find ways to be on the same parenting page. With individuals, I often work with parts that may be overwhelmed by anxiety, depression, loneliness, confusion, or shame. Honoring our wounded parts allows us to explore unmet needs, nurture self-compassion, and engage differently in relationships. I work with major life transitions so that you can be true to yourself during moments of need or change.

Couples work is challenging and emotionally provocative. Feelings of frustration, pain, anger and discouragement alternating with relief, hopefulness, and excitement are common among couples who are trying to resolve their marital discord. Although each couple is unique the following principles hold true in treatment of the majority of partners. 1) A good marriage requires both spouses to psychologically separate from their family of origin and shift their primary love, loyalty to each other. An individual cannot fully participate in an interdepended relationship without being first an independent and autonomous person. 2) Being aware of one's issues and their impact on the relationship is crucial. Couples learn that, they have the power to change their relationship by changing themselves!! 3) Effective communication is necessary for intimacy and connectedness. Silent treatment, pouting, criticizing, contempt and defensiveness are destructive. 4) Inability to resolve problems-not the problems themselves lead to separation and divorce. 5) Creating a balance between fulfilment of "my needs" versus "our needs" is crucial. A spouse who is self-absorbed and lacks consideration causes the other spouse to feel neglected and unimportant. 6) Learning to tackle the problems as a team is an essential skill.
