I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia with over 6 years of experience working with adults and older adolescents in community mental health and private practice. I currently have my own private practice, Christina Keenan Counseling LLC, and I meet with clients via telehealth and in-person at my office in Old Town, Alexandria. I come from a psychoanalytic and trauma-informed perspective, and I have formal training in EMDR (pursuing certification with ongoing consultation) and DBT, and these are the two modalities I draw from the most in my conceptualization of, and work with, clients. I have experience working with clients with complex trauma histories (to include attachment trauma), depression, difficulty managing intense emotions, relationship concerns, and challenges navigating changes and transitions in their lives. I am also a certified perinatal mental health clinician and feel passionate about working with this population. In addition to my work as a therapist, I am an independent contractor with a non-profit called PACE which operates support/parent education groups for first and second-time mothers living in Northern Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and Maryland. I create a safe and affirming space for older adolescent and adult clients to both process and develop skills to help them move away from just "surviving." I aim to meet clients where they are at and to help them foster sustainable positive changes. I encourage feedback from clients about what is helping or not helping as much in our work together. My philosophy is that the client is the expert in their internal world and my job is to help them uncover their truths. I strive to embody cultural humility and a passion for social justice in my work. My goal is to partner with clients to help them develop insight and build more meaningful lives.

I am a Resident in Counseling in Virginia who provides services for anxiety, complex trauma, and other mental health challenges. I will work with you on utilizing your resources, strengths, and skills to overcome challenges and work through setbacks. Self-growth is a continuous process. A part of the human experience is encountering obstacles we believe we cannot overcome. I believe we all have the potential to overcome challenges and become more resilient as we discover and rediscover who we want to be and what we want to accomplish. Congratulations on taking the first (and often most difficult step) of seeking mental health services! My approach focuses on utilizing a holistic, strengths-based approach. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for past disturbing memories and related events. I also use skills and techniques from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Solution-Focused therapy.
