My couples appts are currently full and I do not keep a waiting list - I will update this information when couples appts become available. There are times in life when the coping skills that we have are no longer effective and the things that you thought that you moved past are somehow staring you in the face. I provide a comfortable atmosphere to discover skills to tackle old and new "things". I enjoy working with adults and couples. My area of interests include anxiety, depression, marital concerns, PTSD, and trauma. I incorporate CBT, DBT, EMDR, and AEDP into my practice. When working with couples I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Gottman curriculum. My goal is to partner with clients to explore the skills they desire to focus on in their broad situations and life experiences. I believe that therapy is a unique partnership between the client and therapist. I am open to exploring a partnership that will yield your desired outcomes. You are welcome to schedule a phone consultation to decide if I would be a good partner in your wellness journey. Please access my website for additional information about my practice and fee schedule.

People seek out psychotherapy or psychoanalysis for various reasons—sometimes to solve a particular problem, more often in hopes of remedying a deeper sense of unease. The conversation may begin with a specific source of pain and then evolve to encompass the whole of one's life. We speak our desires and fears, our pride and shame, fantasies, regrets, and more. It's a process in which we make some sense of our perplexing repetitive patterns; equally, it's a way to learn to bear what is ultimately incomprehensible. In time, we can come to terms with our history and find new avenues of enjoyment, purpose, and action. Working from a psychoanalytic perspective, I aim to stay open to mental life in all its complexity, to listen without preconceptions, and to respond in such a way as to foster an ever-deepening inquiry into one's experience. The process unfolds with a spirit of curiosity and an ear attuned to the formations of the unconscious. Availability for in-person sessions will vary in response to the changing circumstances of the pandemic, but the work can always continue without disruption via telehealth; I am licensed in Maine and New Hampshire and can see patients from either state.

Dr. Lance has 34 years of experience in the field. His graduate degrees are in counseling/marriage and family therapy and psychology. He also has an undergraduate degree in Religion. His major focus is in helping individuals and couples work through life-limiting patterns and blocks to greater happiness and fulfillment. It takes courage to look at our relationships and ourselves openly and honestly. Many of us avoid our emotional symptoms (anxiety, relationship problems, compulsions, etc.) hoping they will just go away. We often need someone to help us work through the patterns that we are unaware of in our lives.

“Live life to the fullest.” “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” These are great, but life is more complex than cliché quotes. As your counselor, it is my pleasure to partner with you to find real joy in life again. True freedom does take work and can feel terrible as you work through the pain, but is it worth it? 100%! You are worthy of happiness, freedom, and wholeness, even if you don’t currently feel it. I am a provisionally licensed mental health therapist. I graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My experience ranges to all age groups with varying degrees of mental health conditions. In sessions, I approach you the client with an understanding that every person is unique and create a plan that works with you to accomplish your goals. Regardless of what you are facing, I believe there is a way to healing and I would love to help you find it.

I have extensive experience providing psychotherapy and counseling to people struggling with addictions and trauma and to those dealing with acute and chronic pain, as well as decades of experience using both traditional and nontraditional or holistic approaches to treat such problems as anxiety, depression, and shame. I have pursued training and experience in many different types of psychotherapy methods because I believe that the more approaches I have to a problem, the better I can individualize a treatment program that will work. As a result, I am certified in several different modalities for such treatment methods as EMDR, clinical hypnosis, and “energy therapy." I am a Licensed Psychologist with over four decades of experience providing mental health services to northeastern Minnesota’s Iron Range. My office is in Virginia, but I serve clients from all over St. Louis County and the surrounding areas, from International Falls to Duluth and Cloquet, from Grand Rapids to Grand Marais, and anywhere in between.
