My name is Julia and I am an independently licensed Maine clinical social worker and owner of Ash Point Counseling. I am not accepting new clients at this time. If you are reading these words, you already have the knowledge within you to make the changes you are here to make. I am here as an ally to help elicit that self-wisdom, promote love and honor the resiliency that led you to this point. I am adaptable, holistic, and I genuinely love what I do. I chose this field to be a witness and guide to the profound process of a person reconnecting with themselves and allowing for the reconnection to things that are a part of that self. I work with individuals who identify as female of any age and have experience with anxiety, depression, LGBTQAI, grief and loss, substance use, alcohol use, and growth and development. I specialize in working with college age adults and supporting health care providers. I offer individual counseling to adolescents, young adults and adults, in person and via secure and confidential telehealth video. I am also a registered Affiliate with Health Affiliates Maine. If you are fully vaccinated and feeling well, I encourage most of our time together to be in-person sessions.

I have been working with grief, both normal and complicated, for over 30 years and have specialized training in treating both. For those who are going through a normal albeit difficult time coping with the loss of a loved one, or if you are a caregiver for someone with a stressful illness (e.g., cancer, Alzheimer's), help is here. I also have extensive experience in treating the needs of the LGBTQ community and the issues typical for these clients. I strongly prefer to meet clients in person due to the type of interventions I utilize that are more effective this way. However, I do have limited availability for TeleHealth. View 3 Photos Grief is not only a reaction to death of a loved one. It can also mask itself within the loss of independence due to health and/or mental health challenges, or the changing of one's identity. While painful, grief and can also lead to positive change and newfound strength once you walk through it and can feel what's on the other side. Therapy is a serious commitment that is not to be entered into lightly. If you are ready to "do the work", I am ready to help. It's especially important that you take this step for yourself, not just because others may have suggested you do so. If you feel ready to tolerate the ups and downs that good therapy provides, the hard work is truly worth it.

I am a doctoral student at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Education and the Center for Research on Counseling Education. My research focuses on intellectual and developmental disabilities, with a specific focus on understudied populations. I believe that when a counselor recognizes the more significant contextual issues which affect the client's well-being, advocacy in combination with behavioral therapy can be an appropriate intervention for the client. Additional specialities include counseling education for: adjustment to chronic illness and disability, autoimmune disorders, autonomic dysfunction, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, suicidal ideation, OCD, generalized anxiety, and major depression. Each experience thus far has taught me the importance of real communication in higher education. I am intrigued by the individuals I have encountered; I marvel at unique stories, and I appreciate how each person is validated and empowered in exchange for sharing his/her history.

I am a Licensed Professional Art Therapist in Kentucky, a nationally Board-Certified Art Therapist, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Wisconsin. I am also an artist, herbalist, and aromatherapist. Theoretically I use an eclectic approach, evaluating the needs of my clients and using the most appropriate techniques and interventions. I draw most heavily from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Jungian Analytical Psychology, Person-Centered Theory, and Existential Theory. I believe most problems stem from traumas of varying degrees. Awareness of how trauma impacts the mind and body allows it to be healed rather than avoided or channeled into destructive behaviors. I have experience working with trauma, eating disorders, mood disorders, addiction, personality disorders, grief and loss, and life transitions. I try to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible, and I believe witnessing is an important part of the therapeutic process. I work to promote the holistic health of my clients and help them to determine effective self-care strategies including exercise, nutrition, and creative processes just to name a few.
