Query: I am proposing an article to my AARP editor titled “Aging Alone and Scared to Death.” Living alone is scary, especially if you’ve been married for 62 years as I was when my husband died. I will interview psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and physicians who specialize in geriatrics. I will ask them to e-mail answers to these questions and more for starters.

  1. How many people over the age of 50 live alone in the U.S.?
  2. How many live alone with no family members nearby to help?
  3. What are the risks of living alone? mentally and physically?
  4. Is it mostly women who live alone since men don’t usually live as long as women?
  5. And why is that?
  6. What are your thoughts?
  7. What is your advice for solo agers?
