Times of transition can leave us feeling disoriented, uprooted, and tug at old emotional wounds. Finding our way through the rocky terrain of loss often compels us to reshape priorities, redefine ourselves, and re-imagine our future. If you are grieving the death of someone in your life, facing an uncertain diagnosis, an empty nest, the loss of a relationship, changing employment, adjusting to a geographical move, or experiencing other significant changes in your life, it would be my honor to support you in exploring the layers of your loss, finding your footing again, and restoring your hope for a meaningful future. I offer a safe, accepting, and nurturing setting for exploring the complexity of emotions, changes and challenges that may accompany times of transition, loss and uncertainty in our lives. I approach grief not as a problem to be solved, but rather as a natural, human response to loss. Your grief needs and deserves a witness. Our work together may incorporate mindfulness and self compassionate practices, as well as the use of writing as a means of expression, release and healing. I welcome the opportunity to create space for you to acknowledge and explore the painful aspects of loss and change, while also inviting room for possibilities of healing, regrounding and reconnection.

I am not currently accepting new clients and do not anticipate openings until May 2024. Adults I work with are interested in setting boundaries, overcoming negative thought patterns, processing a loss, enhancing personal relationships and learning how to live intentionally rather than just checking boxes. Knowing that we need help can be hard, asking for help can be even harder. Whether we meet in person or virtually, you will feel comfortable to be able to unpack and process the things that are hard and may even be holding you back from living the life you want to live. When you decide on a therapist you want to work with, I recommend scheduling a consultation to ensure it is a great fit for what you are looking for. I offer up to a 30-minute (free) consultation to help determine if I can help you meet your therapy goals. Please go to my website for additional information www.CarlaHuff.com

The client-therapist rapport is a potent common factor in therapy success. You want to feel comfortable opening up and sharing your truths. Have you found yourself struggling with a change in your life that has left you feeling uncomfortable with your current emotional state. I offer a place to clear your head, organize your thoughts, and express your feelings without judgement. Give yourself permission to pause, process and then progress. I take pride in helping clients who may be struggling to find balance, purpose and a sense of normalcy again. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with relationship issues, self -esteem, sexual orientation, acculturating, "adulting", or who find themselves in transition. For many of us asking for help can be daunting; especially if we are the ones that everyone else comes to for help. I want you to know that it's okay for you to need help too. It doesn't make you less of a leader, friend, mother, father, wife, son or daughter; It makes you human. I invite you to make yourself a priority and take care of you.

Life is probably challenging right now, and it has brought you to a point where you are unsure of what to do. I work individually with children, adolescents, and adults (4 years - 40 years) with slight family counseling (if needed). I have worked with children and adolescents dealing with emotional and behavioral problems at school or home, conflict with guardians/siblings, bullying, low self-esteem, abuse, and self-harm. I have worked with adults dealing with challenges at home or with family, life stressors, anxiety, depression, emotional challenges, and school or career challenges. It is my first priority to create a safe and non-judgmental space (whether virtually or in-person) for you to feel comfortable with me in each session. I want us to have a collaborative space for you to express your wants and needs comfortably. We all need someone in our corner to help us with these difficulties and that is perfectly okay! I like to meet you where you are to help you get to where you want to be. I will help you create healthy relationships and boundaries, set and achieve goals, and feel like you have control again.

I believe in using therapy as a means to help people find the tools within themselves to move toward positive mental health and overall wellness. I believe in support over solution; in walking with someone to face their unique issues however they need rather than “fixing” them. As a social worker, I consider the “whole person” and the systems impacting them to offer a positive therapeutic experience to every client and help them to feel seen, heard, and supported. I specialize in using EMDR with neurodivergent folx who may feel less-than, not good enough, inherently wrong, etc. I use a blend of talk therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing to help clients move through both "big T" and "little t" trauma. Whether you've been through a singular traumatic incident or you've had minor traumatic incidents that built into a negative belief, EMDR can be used to help you better understand yourself and heal. I come to each client with a nonjudgmental, person-centered approach and I will do whatever I can to to help someone move closer to being their best self. I believe that each person deserves love, respect, and support no matter what. I am a fierce advocate for others and a relentless support for those who need it, and I am here to be that for each client.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Clinical Psychology and graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. My therapy approach is taken from an attachment theory and perspective. I believe humans are wired to feel connected and that we all greatly benefit from healthy relationships. Without this connectedness, we may experience loneliness or isolation. I provide a safe, accepting space for individuals, couples, and families using a positive Existential Therapy Model to support self-awareness, meaningful relationships, and values of life. View 5 Photos Together with my clients, I help identify personal strengths, increase self-worth, explore family behavioral patterns and roadblocks to developing healthy relationships. Most important in my therapy practice is to help clients celebrate the freedom of empowerment, healing, and connectedness - all of which I believe leads to personal growth. I have worked with a variety of populations and culturally diverse ethnic groups managing attachment injuries, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, high functioning Autism, codependency, grief, marital/family conflict, infidelity, parenting issues, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, women/men’s issues, and day-to-day stressors.

Do you struggle to get your needs met in your relationships? Perhaps you try repeatedly and fail to achieve harmony? I have a special interest in working with individuals experiencing unhappiness in their important relationships. When my clients first come in, they may feel they are doing the heavy lifting and hope that things will change. Their relationship dissatisfaction gets in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They aren’t the person they strive to be according to their values. They feel like they are failing as a partner and in life. Greater self-confidence and fulfillment are attainable. My experience as a therapist at Duke’s counseling center and on the front lines working with women in abusive relationships at a local agency has provided me with a deep understanding of these challenges and their impact. My hope is also that our time together will provide you with a safe place to express difficult emotions that you may have kept inside for too long. We will also collaborate to achieve your goals. If you want to love yourself again and in your relationships, I’d love to help you get there.

I am interested in our struggles to become ourselves. My decision to become a therapist was based on my own experiences in therapy. Most people come to therapy because they are in pain and life is not working out as they hoped. That means that some of therapy is about the relief of pain and some of it is about a reorganizing of one's life. The experience of therapy also affects the therapist, so I have learned a great deal from my patients. I think "openness" would be a good word to describe my sense of how the process develops. I specialize in issues that relate to men; also grief work, creativity and life transitions such as divorce, midlife struggles and other major changes. I changed my career in order to become a therapist. This makes me attuned to people's life journeys. I'm a writer and the creative process holds fascination for me. I have been involved in the "men's movement" for many years and feel connected to issues men face. I also see therapy as a way of taking "time out" to develop skills and appreciate who we are and assess the blocks that prevent us from becoming more fully ourselves.

Therapy can help you understand how past experiences impact your daily life and relationships. By recognizing these patterns, we can begin cultivating lasting change in our interactions and relationships. Most of my clients want to improve their relationships, their sex life, or explore their identities or transitions. I specialize in sex and relationship therapy, enhancing intimacy and desire, improving differences in desire, and working through pain or dysfunction, particularly within the queer community. I also offer psychological evaluations to clarify diagnoses and collaborate on treatment recommendations. My therapeutic style is inquisitive, direct, humorous, and warm. I tailor my approach to each individual, drawing from psychodynamic perspectives, attachment theory, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. My work is rooted in psychological science and within an anti-racist LGBTQ+-affirming, sex-positive framework. Beginning your journey in therapy can be challenging and intimidating, and I believe that finding the right therapist is essential. We will work collaboratively to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment. I offer a free consultation to see if we're the right fit.
