My clinical area of interest and training is in behavioral pediatric counseling and cognitive behavioral therapy. I use my training to promote positive mental and behavioral health to children and their families. I use skills from a treatment approach called Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) to teach caregivers positive parenting and relationship-enhancing skills. PCIT teaches behavior management strategies to manage disruptive behavior, aggression, and promote adhering to instructions and family home rules. Other mental and behavioral concerns I assist children, youth, and families with include: academic problems, adjustments (death, divorce), aggression, ADHD, autism, child abuse/neglect/trauma, depression, developmental disabilities, fears & anxieties, feeding problems/picky eaters, oppositional behavior, pain management, parent training, sibling rivalry, sleep concerns, stress, thumb sucking, & toilet training. Additionally, I have completed training in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), an empirically-supported treatment program to assist children and their non-offending parents during the process of healing from child abuse, neglect, and trauma. I use these skills to assist individuals through traumatic experiences they've encountered.

I AM NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I am a psychotherapist, licensed as a clinical social worker, certified as an alcohol and drug counselor and TRE® provider, drawing on over 25 years of experience. My primary foundational belief is that our mind and body operate as one organism, which contains its own healing potential. I use evidence-based approaches (EMDR, TRE, IFS) to assist clients in the natural healing process that includes moving to a state of regulation in the nervous system and accessing the wisdom that already exists in a person’s brain chemistry and somatic experience. I find that it is a privilege and an honor to sit with people in partnership. My role is to facilitate the process that unfolds as people find their truth. It is my belief that therapy is a vehicle to help people create the reality they want for themselves, especially when they are feeling stuck/disconnected from the life they would like to live. If you would like to know more about the approaches I use you can access my website hinescounseling.com or look to these sites to see if this is a good fit for you. My clients are hard-working and desire a better quality of life. They are willing to be challenged, trying new techniques to move forward. I use information about normal developmental transitions to move people when they are stuck. The focus is on identity and spirituality as themes I weave into my work. This does not mean organized religion, rather concepts such as connections, acceptance, peace, and letting go. If you choose to combine religion and spiritualuity, for your own growth, that is your choice. I provide education and support to help clients understand their unique situations and develop individualized treatment plans to help them achieve their goals. We use your personal history to help us decipher current issues. You take the lead, set the pace, and realize your potential. I have experience in chemical dependence, eating disorders, gambling, and sex addictions. I also help family members deal with these issues, due to the enormity of the problems associated with the disease and recovery. I have of extensive experience working with anxiety/depression, young adult issues and marital counseling.

Dr. Lance has 34 years of experience in the field. His graduate degrees are in counseling/marriage and family therapy and psychology. He also has an undergraduate degree in Religion. His major focus is in helping individuals and couples work through life-limiting patterns and blocks to greater happiness and fulfillment. It takes courage to look at our relationships and ourselves openly and honestly. Many of us avoid our emotional symptoms (anxiety, relationship problems, compulsions, etc.) hoping they will just go away. We often need someone to help us work through the patterns that we are unaware of in our lives.

Throughout my 15 years of counseling a diverse population of clients, I have found that everyone wants the same thing... an increased sense of happiness and peace. This means something different to us all. I am here to help you figure out what that means to you, and how to obtain it. Throughout my experience as a clinician, I have found a multimodal approach to be most beneficial. I highly value the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Based practices to help people achieve their goals. With the recent addition of becoming an EMDR trained therapist, I feel as though my approach is well rounded and balanced. We all go through struggles. Having someone to help navigate through them is sometimes what we need in order to come out on the other end successfully. Change can be difficult -- Allow me to help you succeed on your journey! Throughout my years of experience, I've found great joy and satisfaction in helping children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I work with children treating for phobias, unhappiness, divorce, grief, separation issues, abuse, neglect, poor self-esteem, and problems adjusting to life transitions. I use a combination of play therapy, art therapy, and talk therapy, as appropriate per the child's developmental level. Treating "difficult" teens is also one of my specialties. I treat youth experiencing challenges with depression, anxiety, abuse, substance use, and self-harm. I treat adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, parenting issues, stress, separation/divorce and other life crisis situations. My passion and unique specialty is animal-assisted therapy. A fully-trained and certified animal is directed by a mental health professional and this type of therapy may aid in increasing verbal interactions, increasing attention skills, developing leisure/recreation skills, increasing self-esteem, and reducing anxiety, depression, and loneliness.
