I work with clients whose psychological issues cross the boundaries between brain, body, mind, and spirit. Special interests are the broad spectrum of ADHD and related brain differences, and the stress caused by living with these in a misunderstanding society. My approach integrates mindfulness practices, attention and working memory training, with depth psychology (dreamwork, a symbolic and imaginative approach to life, seeking meaning beneath constriction). Because neuropsychological issues raise questions of meaning, self-worth, and place in the world, these are central to my work. Unfortunately, our culture often sees ADHD as laziness or irresponsibility rather than what it is: a brain difference with positive as well as negative potentials. I help clients understand and challenge this distortion. The uniqueness of my approach is that I integrate cognitive-behavioral practices like breathing, executive function training, and neurofeedback with depth psychological therapy and mindfulness. The mind and body exist in a profound relationship of mutual influence; therefore, it is most effective to work with both at once.

My approach to counseling is, first and foremost, founded on the quality of the therapy relationship itself. I have worked in the the mental health profession for 35 years and for 25 years in private practice as a licensed psychologist in St. George, Utah. I provide individual and relationship counseling in an emotionally safe, supportive environment, drawing on a variety of approaches tailored to meet your needs and support your healing and growth. My integrative approach includes the exploration of mental, emotional, physical, developmental, spiritual, and interpersonal factors, as well as practical skill development. Mindfulness is central to my counseling approach, having taught Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for 30+ years (next session begins January 25; see davidbtate.com for details). My doctoral dissertation contributed to the now extensive research supporting the significant emotional and physical health benefits commonly realized by MBSR participants. I have provided consultations and mindfulness trainings for businesses including Nike, Ernst and Young, New Line Cinema, Abbott Laboratories, AT&T, the National Make-A-Wish Foundation, Zion National Park, and the NCAA. Thanks for taking time to view my information. I try to be what I would look for in a psychologist: someone who is tactful, cares about the person, and responds with both knowledge and compassion. You will find me to be interactive. I will not sit silently or simply reflect what you just said. I will let you know my perceptions and discuss research, making suggestions on ways to feel better. I tend to focus both on your emotions and your thoughts. You will do most of the talking, but you will get a genuine reaction from me. My experience includes over 30 years in practice. I see a variety of people about relationships (including couples), anxiety (panic, phobias, obsessive thinking, stress), depression, sudden trauma, alcohol/substances recovery and other problems. Please call to ask if I have experience in the areas you need. I see a wide range of people, including medical and legal professionals, educators, tech employees and managers, gay/lesbians, veterans, police officers, entertainers, artists, and mental health professionals. There is no pressure to come in if you call. You can ask questions and think about our conversation before deciding.

I am so glad you decided to take time to invest in yourself. Life often takes a toll on us, and we stay so busy it is hard to make time to take care of ourselves. I have worked with people with a variety of symptoms and from different walks of life. The thing a lot of people are missing is connection, and I strive to help create that connection and start moving forward. I work with men and women with the transition to parenthood and with couples in strengthening their marital friendship. I have experience work with trauma and have extensive training in this as well as being certified in EMDR. I really enjoy helping people through transitions in life and am especially passionate about women's issues. These issues, including postpartum, hormonal, infertility, etc, are so complex and can lead to other symptoms. I can help you navigate through this and connect to other supports in your life. I have received specialized training in perinatal (pregnancy and postpartum) mood disorders and infertility counseling. I create a safe and comforting environment to bring your thoughts, feelings, fears, and joys to. I incorporate faith into my counseling when it is mutually important to those I am counseling.

Dr. Lance has 34 years of experience in the field. His graduate degrees are in counseling/marriage and family therapy and psychology. He also has an undergraduate degree in Religion. His major focus is in helping individuals and couples work through life-limiting patterns and blocks to greater happiness and fulfillment. It takes courage to look at our relationships and ourselves openly and honestly. Many of us avoid our emotional symptoms (anxiety, relationship problems, compulsions, etc.) hoping they will just go away. I believe, the single most important element of counseling is the relationship between the therapist and client. The first step is for us to work together to balance both a professional and heartfelt relationship. You'll find the office welcoming, comfortable, discreet atmosphere; where you can feel safe to discuss your needs. I serve a variety of client populations, including, youth, adolescent, adult and geriatric clients. Couples, Family, Individual and Group Therapy are a focus. Specializations: Depression, Anxiety, Grief, Anger, Parenting and Loss. Referrals for medication management can also be facilitated through my office, if desired.. Whether you are experiencing workplace reentry, job loss, stress management, or career choices, life transitions, relationships, parenting, or chronic illness; we'll look into why themes repeat themselves and identify new outcomes. We'll work together to develop fresh goals and new solutions to consider on your journey. As a Christian counselor, we can address the, mental, social and spiritual, (psychosociospiritual) parts of your life. I believe that birth order, family roles, social experiences and birth home, along with your faith walk, all come together to flavor your reactions to life situations.

Maya Angelou says, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better." I firmly believe that we all do the best we can with the knowledge we have at any moment in our lives. If there has been a time in your life when you felt "I should have done better," it's OK and very normal to feel that. It's when we recognize the need to do better, that we can make changes in our lives. Taking the step to get help will be the action that makes all the difference in your life. People often presume all therapists are good listeners, yet many do more talking. I am truly a "listener." My approach to working with clients is to start with their strengths, meaning everyone has the potential inside to heal and choose the life they want to live. We will look at the connection between the mind and body and how trauma affects our ability to make decisions. After understanding your trauma impact, we will remap your mind and body patterns. Therapists are often asked, “can you just tell me what to do?” My approach is to work with you by asking questions focused on your unique situation. Questions often yield an “aha” moment. Your mind provides the answers you were seeking all along. I have the pleasure of the “universe” providing answers allowing us to work on creating the right plan for you.
