Like many who have become mental health professionals, my journey toward becoming a counselor blossomed from the muck of early childhood trauma. It was taboo for me to seek counseling but it was acceptable for me to become a counselor. In my early 20s, my first counseling session was flooded with my tears. I could barely speak through the shame of needing help. My counselor at the time was patient and kind. He taught me self-compassion and accountability. Meanwhile, I sought avenues to build a career based on giving back to others what I was lacking growing up: the support and education to heal and grow. The expressive arts have always been a source of comfort and healing for me. When I was a kid and everyone asked "what do you want to be when you grow up", I would reply, "an artist for Disney". Until I was an adult, I thought this dream conflicted with my passion for psychology until I learned that I could incorporate the arts into treatment. Since then, I have become trained and educated as an Art Therapist. Growing up, I was raised to think like an innovator. The scientific method and problem-solving has become my default thought process. In order to serve youth virtually across North Carolina, I have begun the journey of incorporating Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) into treatment. This treatment compliments my work with teens and women struggling with anxiety, depression, and phobias well. I also have been intensively training in DBT and Theraplay modalities. I am constantly learning new things and I read at least 1 new book per week. I am a lifelong spiritual seeker and maintain a daily connection to my creator. When I'm not building my practice and seeing clients, I am spending time with my husband, two adorable children, hiking or playing games at home. I'm excited to meet new people and learn new things!

I'm Dr. Bridget Cabibi, a licensed clinical psychologist who addresses anxiety, depression, transitions, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, trauma, addiction/codependency, sexuality, spirituality, and problems related to neurodiversity (ADHD, ASD, OCD, etc.) in diverse populations. I offer an integrative approach to therapy, tailoring interventions to the specific needs of the individual. I primarily draw on CBT, DBT, ACT, psychodynamic, and person-centered approaches. I believe that every individual has a unique set of genetics and experiences that combine to make them who they are in the present moment and that every person is valuable and deserving of a life well lived. I help people reflect on all of the things influencing who they are, including culture, religion, gender, location, and social situations, so that they can start to make conscious decisions about what they want to keep and what they want to leave behind on their journey to richer lives and increased happiness and confidence. One key to the effectiveness of therapy is the relationship itself; it's important to me that you feel accepted for exactly who you are at this moment. As your partner in change, I am always looking beneath the surface to make meaning and connections. While helping you challenge unproductive thoughts and sharing tried and true techniques, I will help you process the experiences that have led to your current state so that you can actively choose how you want to go forward on your journey and become the author of your own story. This way, you can become more resilient, better able to handle future challenges, and more prepared to rebound from setbacks.

I reside and practice from the heart of Central Virginia with my incredible husband and three beautiful children. In over a decade, I've been honored to work in multiple treatment environments -- using a variety of traditional and nontraditional modalities. From Cognitive-based, Somatic Therapy, and Trauma-Sensitive mindfulness practices, to the creative arts, Play Therapy, and inner child work, I love to make my methods as individualized as those who desire support. For nearly six years, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering for a local maternal health nonprofit that is impassioned with sustaining free programming which empowers, educates, and eliminates access barriers to care. I seek to use a social justice lens, providing equitable spaces where persons can be authentic within safety. When not working, I enjoy going on adventures with my family, writing, and watching throwback Black 90’s sitcoms.

Life can be hard at times, and going at it alone makes it harder. Having someone who will listen and who you can trust can mean the world. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I strive to help clients work through past and current issues by forming a relationship built on genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard. My passion to create a safe atmosphere allows clients to feel heard and to focus on their goals. Practicing through an eclectic lens of counseling approaches, I try to provide the tools and guidance that allow clients to work through any issue they need help with. As a counselor, I have a laid back, relaxed and informal style. I believe that a large part of what creates change is having a great connection with your counselor, something I strive for with all of my clients. While my main focus is on addiction, spiritual counseling and men’s issues (fatherhood, being a husband, gender roles, etc.), I am trained on a wide range of mental health and life issues and would be excited to work with you on any that may be challenging you. Reaching out is the first step. While it can be scary, I know you will not regret it. Regardless of your faith, sexual identity, race or gender identity, I am here for you. I would be honored to join you in a journey towards helping you achieve your goals. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, two children and dog. My favorite activities are kayaking the river, spending time in nature, reading and trying new restaurants. I also enjoy dry humor, pranks, animals and anything nerdy.
